My eldest son (30) went out with me for the first time last Saturday.
He is know mad about boats and wants to buy a powerboat - unknown to me, he started with a budget of 5k and ended up the evening talking to his brother with a budget of 100k - so thats his current budget 100k.

He has asked me to ask for advice on what make/model would suit these requirements:-
Wants it to look sporty and sleek.
Wants to be able to tow skiers and toys etc.
Wants to go away with his friends for a week or so at a time, so it needs at least 4 berths.
He reckon he needs 35 to 40 knots top speed.

Yet he wants to be able to make fairly fast comfortable passage in say a f4 without it slamming all the time.

He likes the look of the 37 foot Sunseeker Tomahawk - has anyone any experience of this model?

All suggestions welcome.

He would not take a boat out unless he was trained etc and he has already asked me about the courses and how to go about getting trained. His last toy was a helicopter and naturally he had to qualify to be a pilot. So his attitude and approach is first class - he is in the process of decding the best type of boat for him and that is what he currently needs advice on.

You'll have to be really friendly for four people to sleep on a Tomahawk 37 for a week coz as far as I know there's only 1 double berth and a postage stamp of a saloon. Also, most were petrol powered so steer him away from any of those. If its going to be reasonably comfortable at sea, he's going to need 35 foot plus and if he's going to sleep 4 he's going to need a second under helm cabin. For £100k, I would look at:
Sunseeker Martinique 39
Fairline Targa 37 (£100k +) or Targa 38/39
Windy 37
Princess V39 (£100k+)

He is sitting on the fence a bit wanting the accomodation plus the size and also a sports boat to tow skiers and toys.

Best to go for a boat which can have the accomodation but also able to stick one of those Sealine type dinghys with your favorite drive stuck on it then that can tow the toys whilst the other lads beer it up on the main boat.

Spend £20k on sporty speedboat and £80k on decent rag & stick. That way he can be on the water in nearly all weathers have mega amounts of fun and his depreciation on the s/b will be offset by appreciation on r&s.

You see the jets are subtly taking over ....

I am looking forwad to passing my son in my new jet as he struggles along in what this hour would be a 37 - 40 foot Cranchi in a f5 - I reckon he will manage about 12 knots as I zip past in my old mans boat at 30 knots!

He had the cheeck to tell me yesterday that all flybridge cruisers are "old mens boats".......

So at the moment it is the Cranchi he is focusing on but this can change by the hour. He wil increase the budget as required, so I can see him continuing the great tradition of trying to get into boating for £x, then increasing the budget as one looks at the market more and more and ending up paying £3X or £4X .... he is lucky as it is a self imposed budget, rather than an absolute one. It will be interesting to see what he ends up with.

The garage feature on these boats has attracted him as he will probably add a fast rib or jet boat.

Not bad progress since a four hour trip last Saturday morning!

AAArrgghh

The Garge feature on the Endurance.....could be a bit of a problem. Strictly one man PWC (at a push)....and you'd have to check with Cranchi about whether there is any small enough jet rib in production to fit..!!

Why? I'm not writing cheques ?
