In my search for my ideal boat on a budget I have come across something with a BMW 6 cylinder 150 hp diesel and leg. I believe it to be a BMW D150 from the mid '90s(???).

I know nothing about BMW marine engines so does anyone have any experience of them? Are they actually BMW or badged something else? And...most importantly, is there any service/spares back up?

Can't find much on the internet...

Sealine fitted a few back in the 80's, general view of the boat's in the 90's was you automatically replaced all BMW engines as they were a liability. Don't ask me the detail, it was just while talking to engineers whilst doing warranty work.

Think of the old saying that includes "barge pole".

Started out as a VM marinisation, then BMW marine (they got out of Marine market very quickly) then picked up by the american company that does not like diesel: Mercruiser.

I had a pair of those 180hp with all three brandings on them! Not a good result.

We had them in our Sealine 305 back in 1985 ,boat was new so no problems, came across the same boat a few years ago spoke to the owner, original engines B220 2x 3.5 petrol engines still going strong but parts for legs had become a problem sourcing ,

Had a pair in a 88 model Birchwood TS37 . I never had any issues but there's so many forums like this were people slate them, most have never actually owned them but they know of a friend of a friend who did.
Got a bad rep whether justified or not but that reputation does effect resale. I had a couple physically walk off the boat once they knew It had BMW's fitted.
Sold the boat but has since changed hands twice in four years, boat has been up for sale for over a year at silly money.
Issue with the Birchwood was bad access to the Port engine as it was under a corner sofa so routine checks would often go undone, more the boats design fault than the engine.

I offered to buy it back at reasonable money but was turned down flat.
If you're planning on keeping the boat for a while and buy it at the right price you'll be fine . Just don't expect to flip it quickly
should you want to sell it.

I used to have BMW B220 petrol and outdrive, it was superb and the outdrive much better than my current Volvo DPE's. Never had any issues and I think its still blasting round the Solent.

These guys in the US seem to like them Boats - V12 Engineering

But like any engine of that age you will need to tread carefully.

I had one bmw set up ,engine and leg, spares were expensive and I think only available from one place... I would recommend that you avoid this boat...

What was it called ? may have met you back then, or at least the boat.

We purchased the boat from Windsor racecourse yacht basin ,boat name was Sara Miranda, after checking my records we were not the first owners, year of manufacturing 1983 we purchased around 1984/1985 were told at the time it was the Earl's Court boat show model, think it was one of the first Sealine flybridge models, no thrusters or GPS back in those days, cracking boat used to fly. If I recall correctly chap named Peter Humphreys used to service it for us.

That would be a 30 then dinette by galley, used to be a second cabin option for Germany, there was not a lot o boats around the standard spec those boats had. If the show boat I remember ( think ) going down to Earls Court with a new charger part way through the show for it.

They were good days.

it's a small world! We were going to buy Sara Miranda back in 1986. At that time it was up for on brokerage through Chris Colman at Swanwick. Was his company Quay Marine?
