How does a containor ship with state of the art nav aids collide in the channel. Even the cleaner on the bridge can use a radar. Wer'e the crew of both ships having their Xmas do, at the time of collision ? Some heads must roll after this crash . No doubt some of the Lloyds insurance syndicates wont be having a very mery Xmas either. Oh well worst things happen at sea.

That area is very tricky because some vessels are crossing over from the continental side to the English side to proceed west. It could be one vessel was overtaking the other and something called "radar assisted collision" came into play.
I'm only hazarding a guess based on familiarity with that whole area.
I did note that the car carrier had only two European Officers, the Master and one other (Chief Engineer?) could this have helped? The rest of the crew were Philipinos probably with a minimum of experience/qualifications if any.

How can another ship hit the wreck?

Re: BMW parts from LJS services

LJS, are you planning a forum dive on the wreck? I know the seats and CD players will be mashed, but I could do with a new set of alloys with new tyres. Are you taking orders?

Re: Wrecks on wrecks

Re Ic, who asks how does another ship hit the first wreck? Exactly the same thing happened when the Texaco Carribean went down off Folkestone. Despite a ring of buoys and patrol vessels we had a tripledecker wreck - Texaco Carribean, Nikki, Brandenburg, all on top of one another if recall, back in early 1970's.
Since then the quality of watchkeeping ability has plummetted to an abysmal level, so why the hell do I keep crossing the Channel in 31'of plastic???

Both vessels on paralell course, "Tricolor" (Norwegian owned carrying the cars) had overtaken the "Kariba" (Bahamas Registered) on her Starboard side. Illedgedly the "Kariba" then sharply turned to Starbord, virtually torpedoing "Tricolor". Hole in "Tricolor" is of an approximate size of a medium sized tube station and she sank within one and a half hour in 27m of water.

If it's new wheels & tyres you want call the crew who have decended upon our normally quiet village, they should be able to help. Last night our neighbours' new car was left on bricks together with another one about 150 yards away. According to Postie they have been active for about a month now and dozens have been 'done', he says plod knows who the are but can't catch em. No doubt plod is too busy attending to speeding motorists et al.

<font color=blue> David, shame on you Tsk! Tsk! surely you know a motorist doing 80 on a motorway is a far bigger criminal than some poor yobbo swiping the wheels off a car. Next thing you will imply that several officers engaged on speed trap duties would be better employed catching burgulars. Get your priorities right, I bet you are one of those guys that object to lottery money going to worthwhile causes such as the "Left Handed Upper Silesian Lesbian Association" and would rather see it wasted on things like O.A.Ps. and Sick Children.

Living here in Norway and having to use the roll-on-roll-off ferries which constantly cross all fjords over here. I voiced my nervousness to a fare-collector about 'being on this Norwegian boat with all these cars!'

Lived in Norway for 28 years and used the ferries frequently and did not feel concern about safety on the ferries as the sheltered fjords seldom build up the kind of long tall swell you find in the more serious crossings (can be un-comfortable though). Only time I felt a bit un-certain about safety was on a journey between Stavanger and Newcastle and we were 11 hours delayed due to poor weather conditions in the middle of the North Sea (where we spent the night keeping the bow into the waves). The morning revealed some hatches torn off and several damaged cars on one of the decks.
