Tempted by fairline Turbo 36 with two BMW diesels. Of course, the price is favourable due to engine make. How are the beemer engines rated in terms of reliability, parts availability etc?

Well the boat itself is a great sea boat but rather high for a full lock which sort of makes life difficult for a single-hander. As regards the engines I have never heard any praise for them but I have heard a few moans.

The BMW diesel is basicaly a VM diesel, when BMW quit the marine world it was bought by Mercruiser and they carried on making it for years with many modifications however, many BMWs' have had the later mercruiser cooling system parts fitted as this was always dodgy on the BMW. Pete Humphreys at Val Wyats is the BMW guru see here http://www.phmarine.co.uk/bmw.html
you can also buy bits from the States where they sell them remanufactured http://www.bmwmarine.net/ I used to a have BMW petrol engine which was great but I'm not sure I'd reccomend any older engine without careful inspection.

Also Turbo 36 needs the big 306 Volvos to make it perform well the BMWs or small Volvos will not be enough for sea work but fine for just river or Estuary use, any small engined Turbo 36 will be cheap because of this.

I endorse everything chris_d has said above. Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near a BMW or Mercruiser engined boat. A bit of a harsh judgement perhaps but boating can be problematic enough without going looking for trouble.

If it is this one: Click here, I'd say it was too expensive given the engines

Ah, and says "stern drive" too. Wife and I looked at a boat a few years back with a BMW 6 pot mated to a stern drive from the, allegedly, same stable, and even the broker commented that the setup "needed careful and regular maintenance to perform at its best"...
