I just bought a regal 19.6 with a bmw b220 with a mark ll leg. The carb (solex 4a1) needs help. So should I rebuild it, buy a rebuilt on from v12 or do a weber or holley conversion on it?
thanks for any info you can give me

the throttle governor settings are a pain as are the choke valve settings
I have the set up info if you need it
What's happening or not happening ?

cheers
mick

Sorry to be blunt, but thats one of the worst engine/leg combinations ever put in a sportsboat, with spares very difficult to get.

Its a painful suggestion, but bite the bullet and put a used Mercruiser unit in and break the BMW for parts.

The choke was removed and a holley electric was put on that does not work right so he would wire the butter fly open once it is warmed up. He also told me at low rpms it sputters and pops but at higher rpm it is fine. He had the boat for 12 years and has been like that from the day he got it. The secondaries are clean looking but the primaries look like it has been back firing. I am just going through and servicing everything getting it ready for the lake and want everything right on it. This boat has 530 hours on it and has only been in freshwater and kept on a trailer.

I know they're not the best and not liked by a lot of people but I am into older bimmers and found this boat and had to have. I did not buy this boat to be an offshore boat or for long trips. it will be used on smaller lakes a few times a year to pull the kids around in tubes and hang out .have fun.

Fair enough, I pestered Dad to buy one of the BMW Fletchers as a kid, thought they were dogs danglies. Good luck.

Sorry complete b*****x I had a B220 and MK11 leg its a great engine, went well with no issues for ten years, sold it to another forumite 7 years ago and its still blatting round the Solent well enough. The Beemers have a totaly unfounded bad reputation, however its an old engine so like all old engines prone to issues. I bought a gasket kit for the Solex but to be honest it made little difference it just needed a good fine tune. But if your sure its knackered and worn spindles etc... can't be refurbed, I would bite the bullet and buy a refurbed one from V12.

I am not sure how worn it is I have not messed with it yet other then spraying carb cleaner in it and adjusting the idle. I am doing a tune up on it and after I check the valves then I will start on the carb. I dont mind buying on from v12 if that is the best route. I found this kit and did not know if it would work better then the solex or if I should stick with the solex.http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-320i-BMW-630cs-Carburetor-Conversion-Kit-Weber-kit-/271218955935?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3ABMW&hash=item3f25e8d69f&vxp=mtr

You would have to check the float chamber vent arrangement, as most marine carbs vent into the venturi or similar rather than directly to atmosphere so as to reduce risk of fumes in the bilge.

With this in mind if you fitted a road carb there could possibly be insurance issues

Thanks, That is a good point. Sound like I should keep it stock and just buy a rebuilt one if i can not get mine dialed in.
