Hi,

My marina (Birdham Pool in Chichester Harbour) have recently announced an increase of marina fees (which is to be expected) but they have been increased to the point where Birdham is now the most expensive marina in Chichester Harbour (but by now means the best in terms of convenience and service). It certainly has its charm which is a big part of its appeal, but its cheapness relative to neighbouring Chichester Marina has always been a big factor in being there.

Correspondence on the subject seems to be going in the bin (literally) but I gather that the rationale for the extent of the price hike is that there is a campaign within the BMF to increase marina fees across the board and that Birdham Pool have decided to take a lead on this (charming). Has anyone heard of such a campaign?

Regards,

Tom

Tom,
I also berth at Birdham. It's such a unique place and I despair. As the cost rises, it will be increasingly difficult to justify being there unless some careful investment also takes place (dredging the channel, new lock gates, electric supply, waiting pontoon?)

Surely it cannot be more expensive than the two MDL marinas in Chi. What is the new charge for a 10m boat?

Think you're wrong Guapa. Apparently ports and harbours (inc marinas) are not covered under the act that makes cartels illegal. Or so I was told by a lawyer some years ago .

Not suggesting of course that there is a cartel. I doubt that there is to be honest - difficult to see how it would work except on a very local basis..

Possibly - but if the BMF is involved... it's like dealing with a prostitute: you know you're going to get screwed; it's just a matter of how much it's going to cost you.

I have no experience in these matters, but I thought it was the prostitute that got screwed /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

10m is going to cost £3660 at Birdham Pool plus storage ashore. This includes 10% surcharge for not paying yearly. Quite alot given access is 3 hrs a day (at best) and it can often take 45 mins to get out.
