Anyone know where I can get a workshop manual for my old 1960~70's BMC 1500 diesel engine either to buy, copy or loan.

Try searching on Google for an "Operators Manual" instead. I found a download for my Thornycroft 154 (BMC 2500 diesel) mine was 72 pages.
There are perhaps thousands of these BMC engines still in service, many in Canal Boats and reading a Canal Boat Newspaper the other day there was an advert for an engine dealer who specialises in BMC Diesels, I think the paper is Towpath. and the dealer "Calcutt Boats"
