In the manual for my bmc 1500, it mentions heat shelds that are fitted to the injectors.

I have just got a new head but there seems to be no seat for the washers to sit on. Could this be a modification?

Appreciate any ideas or help

Thanks, Alex

I have asked this question and had some excellent replies so its worth a search on archives. basically the heatshields are samll steel corrugated washers that fit in the injector recess on the head. once in they can be v diff to remove. consensus seems thta if they come out easily remove and replace v cheap. if stuck in there leave alone- poking around with screwdrivers etc will cause more damage. they are not an essential sealing washer such as the copper washer. you can also get good info on bmc engine from the reading diesel course which is on line. just google reading diesel
hope thius helps

The head i have is brand new not reconditioned so it has never had any washers on it.

The problem is there appears to be no ridge or anything for the washers to sit on or hold in.

If it comes to omitting them would i get any problems?

if it is brand new u should have no problems fitting them. i would certainly fit them in your case and there is no reason to omit them. im not sure what u mean by saying there is no ridge to fit them . the washer goes in the furthest recess of the injector hole not on the injector itself. if you look down the injector hole you will see 2 shelves the deepest is for the heat shield and the other is for the copper washer.

hi alex
just had a look at the manual.on page 51d shows a cross section of injector.it shows the tip of the injector with the corrugasted washer sandwiched onto the injector housing. the copper washer is just above sealing the injector. Isuppose the "new" head may have done away with the lower arrangment and just relies on the injector tip and copper washer. sorry i cant be of any other help but would be interseted to know what u find out

No washers here either

I recently got my injectors cleaned and aslo found no heat shields. The engine has been running fine without them. There also did not seem to be any recess anywhere. Me thinks there must be more than one flavour of BMC 1500. BTW mine has clocked more than 4000 hours and it's still ticking over fine.
