I'm not sure about the gearbox for the "Captain" engine, but I had a 2.5.litre "Commander" engine with a Parsons gearbox behind it. The brake band was fine but the multiplate wet clutch was seriously worn. The thickness of the discs is pretty critical, and when worn they just willnot transmit the power. Check these before blaming the brake band.
Peter.
When you say slips , !!
the brake band locks the planet carrier to the gearbox casing to give reverse, this is the same principle for Morris or thornicroft .adjustment is simple it has to be fairly tight but not to tight as to cause binding and over heating.
If it jumps out of forwards gear make sure the fingers are adjusted , by that I mean when you engage forwards gear the lever should have an over center feeling or you can feel it go past a certain point then pulls it's self into gear.
If your plates are worn you may well get over heating which would discolor the oil, as well as obvious heat.
Check you are using the right grade of oil, to high a grade the oil pressure will be high and cause slipping , to low a grade and the plates can snatch re rapid take up and there will be leakage between the plates.
Sae 30 or 40 engine oil multigrade.
Two weeks ago a chap advertised a bmc petrol he wanted £150.00 in the Spalding area.

MTB you mention Morris gearboxes. I have one which came with a second hand motor I bought. Were there different sizes? and what other identification is there? What horsepower are they suited to as mine seems to be solidly constructed with large bearings. Any info would be much appreciated.
Sorry but cant really help any more , I think they were ok up to 40 hp but don't take my word for it .Usually on veddets / navigators don't know about the side valve Morris but I think they had the newage types !!
None of my early books have much about the gearboxes plenty re cooling water pumps even prop shafts plumber blocks but nout about gearbox .
One thornicroft book talks about tmp boxes another newage but you have to bear in mind some boxes have no markings at all.
Most of the stuff I learned, while training as a marine engineer many years ago so these boxes were there to be played about with.
I had a Morris / bmc engine diesel that had a standard g/box, tmp. the engine was I think a three litre or there about's ,( not 2.4 ) I would have had to take the head off to see which engine it actually was .So don't fret to much unless your expecting to take things up in sizes .
But I assume you'll have a standard 4"" coupling and not more than 1""1/2 "" shaft so you'll be governed by that re prop size

David, If the gearbox slips in reverse it is the brake band which requires adjustment, if it slips in forward it is the three pawels which require to be adjusted.
The forward drive is basically a clutch with multiple plates and the three pawels force them together causing the drive to be transmitted. I have still the manual for my fathers BMC engine dated 1960 but the gearbox is the standard manual box as fitted to Vedettes, Navigators and Captain diesels.
If you wish this send me a PM and I will send you a copy of the adjustment.
