Its me again, fitted new front oil seal to my bmc 1.5 fitted to my seamaster 26,out today for 10 miles, came back bilges full of oil again, sump all clean as when i left, cant for the life of me find were the leak is.Have noticed that the dip stick "bottoms" out rather than on its flange, wondered if im over filling to level mark because of wrong dipstick, changed the oil as well and it only took abot 3.5 pints before it showed on dipstick, any ideas?Alan

Oil leak

It is over 20 years since I rebuilt a BMC 1.5 but is it possible the leak is on the rear crankshaft seal which would throw the oil onto the inside of the belhousing.

Other thought is that the crankcase is being pressurised by one of the breathers being blocked.

If you are worried about the quantity of oil, drain the sump and then fill with the required quantity of oil as per the manual.

bmc oil leak

Hi John, thanks for the reply, yes thats what i thought ,rear oil seal but dealer told me there was no seal but a "spiral" thrower to stop the oil leaking into the bell.Breathers are fine,of course the bell housing is typically the only part that is almost impossible to view from underneath even with a mirror,if it does have a rear seal that needs replacing i suppose its a case of flywheel off ,pull out old seal then fit new ,similar to front crank seal, all be it that you need the hands of a baby with the strength of Arny.Alan
