I have thought about headsets many times but in our case, SWMBO and I instinctively know what to do when mooring up. We've been boating together for more than 20yrs and she's learnt that it's not conducive to cordial marital relations if she cocks it up

Yep - it's mooring up that's the problem
Often, it is just the two of us on board and going into berths that we haven't been before always makes us both more anxious.
It is then that I like to know where she is

Docking in Valencia last week - we had a strong wind on the bow so it was difficult keeping the bows from blowing off and the wind was pushing us back to the quay.
Usually, I can pop down and help but with this wind, I had to stay on the FB to keep the boat lined up and off the quay.
The stern lines were on but I didn't realise that SWMBO had already got the starboard lazy line cleated to the bow and was working on the port one by the time that I joined.
I will never understand women - as I made my way along the port deck after her to help, she shouted "DONT KEEP FOLLOWING ME" - apparently, I was in the dog house for something.
If we had some form of headset communication I believe she wouldn't have got so touchy.
To any bystanders, it looked quite a slick operation but there is always room for improvement.

I keep well away, usually surveying operations from the flybridge, until my SWMBO has tied up all the lines, connected the leccy cable and checked the fenders. Only then do I feel safe to come down. I've had too many "well bloody well do it yourself" type comments followed by a stomp into the saloon to interfere in my SWMBO's crewing duties

Contentious thread drift, (but it was my thread ), but do most boating couples stick to 'him' at the helm and 'her' on the lines? We try to mix it up a little...

With a wheelhouse we needed a solution, chose the PMR with throat mikes, avoids all the horrible wind buffeting noise you get with normal mikes - and when it's really windy you need the radios most!

Always me at helm coming into marinas and harbours and always SWMBO at the helm when picking up a buoy; must be a confidence thing because we're carp the other way round.

Yeah thats pretty much how we are. The fact is that she's a better line handler than me (although I have to tie all her bowline knots) and I'm a better driver than her. Over 20yrs+, we've sort of got into the habit of me doing the helming and SWMBO doing the lines. I'm quite happy to keep it that way but she keeps asking what would happen if I keeled over with a heart attack. My usual answer is that worrying about her scraping the gelcoat wouldn't be the uppermost thing in my mind at that particular moment

My SWMBO is less worried about the heart attack scenario and more concerned about the competitive question, 'who is the best driver'...mind you with IPS, Joystick and a hammerhead berth I reckon that our Border Terrier could make a pretty good attempt at steering us in!

I met a couple who were using motorbike bluetooth intercoms from this company (http://senabluetooth.com/) to good affect. Sadly I can only remember the name of the company but not the model. It seemed an ideal solution especially since there are no telephone calls involved so roaming charges would not be an issue.
