Can anyone recommend a company that will insure me and my Moody30 (valued at £23,000) to make a passage across the Atlantic Via the Canaries?

If you are an RYA or RNLI member and have a Yachtmaster ticket you will probably need to look no further than the fine chaps at Bishop Skinner. Best service ever received when we had a total loss claim in the Med. Paid out in full with no quibbles within 30 days.
Now that's what I call service !!!

Echo Grumpy's post.
I've just done an Atlantic circuit with Bishop Skinner's cover (I'd been with them for the previous eight years). It required a new survey (but the previous one was ancient). They covered me single-handed for everything but the two longest hops (Cape Verde Isles to Antilles and Antilles to Azores), where they required one additional person on board. It may be that they were to some extent persuaded to view the windvane steering as a 'third' crew member, which is fairly common practice. The premium more-or-less doubled.

Sam: feel free to PM me if you want further info.

If you have the right experience and the boat has a good survey you should have no difficulty in getting insurance from any of the major insurers. Would also endorse Bishop Skinner (Bluefin), but there are many others.

I would steer clear of one company which Tanya and Graham (surname fails me) who lost their westerly corsair (I think) in NZ they fought tooth and nail to not pay out.
Tanya wrote an article in YM about their very traumatic experience with this company.

Thanks for your responses. I am still struggling to find someone who will insure us.
the Boat is 30ft and built in 1977. I was born in 1983. I have my dayskipper tickets but not yacht master. I am running out of options. Is there anything I can do?

Give Rob at Craftinsure a bell. He added cover for me at a very reasonable price.

My boat's a year older (post #3). I have my breadth badge but not much else.
It was never mentioned but I suppose I also had several years' no-claims history, despite lots of mileage, which to any sensible insurer ought to count for more than bits of paper. Bit hard to summon retrospectively, though.

You should be able to get third party, but you can understand the reluctance of insurers to take on risks of an old boat and a skipper that does not have any history (assuming that is the case). Insurers are usually more interested in claims history and experience (plus of course a survey on the boat) than qualifications. Many people sail without insurance of the boat because the premiums are too high for those on a limited budget. Inevitably once you have completed your voyage successfully you will probably find insurance easier to get.

I would not insure a £23,000 yacht. The risk of losing it is negligible if you conduct your self properly and prepare the yacht soundly. I would carry 3rd party liability though.

Another plus for Pantaenius. We have been with them for 16 years. Always helpful and very prompt to pay out on our only claim, which was for burglary. They are not the cheapest but we have never heard any derogatory comments about them.

Our boat is 32 years and they have never demanded a survey.

I recommend Admiral

They insured us for a 2 handed Atlantic Circuit when our previous insurer would not. They wanted a 'Sailing CV', basically an idea of what you've done over the years and a Survey.
Robert the boss sails long distance and several of the staff actually understand sailing!

There are manufacturers that they will not insure, but I don't think that you have one of them.

Call and chat to them, great people.

John.
