How long is a piece of string !
Could be a multitude of things but blue smoke generally indicates burning oil so engine is worn out.

As said, almost certainly oil burning. Is this recent or sudden? Does it blow at higher revs constantly, probably rings or bore wear, or after ticking over for a while and then clearing, which may only be valve guide seals. A world of cost difference between them to fix.

In the 1960's when the BMC Diesels were being fitted in the Austin J4 Diesel Van. I had a garage which sold vans and over a period of about 5 years I bought probably about 30 Austin J4 vans from a large haulage business, many had done over 300,000 miles and driven flat out as the maximum speed was only about 50 mph. They all blew blue smoke out due to the high mileage. Consequently with the wear on the piston rings and cylinder bore compression was down and in a morning the only way to start the engine was to use easy start.

At that time Hepolite the Piston Ring Manufacturer made a special piston ring for Oil Burning engines and we often fitted them to these J4 engines and sometimes they were that bad that they had to go for a re-bore.
In the 1970's when these J4 vans were being scrapped the engines were "reconditioned" and fitted in boats.

In the 1970;s and 1980, in the UK there were many "kit boats" being sold and I believe that about 10 years ago I bought a 1986, Colvic Watson which had a "Reconditioned" BMC Thornycroft Engine.

Some engine parts are unobtainable, I wanted a water pump as a spare, I could get one serviced or on exchange but to actually buy one, nobody would part with one.

I believe that some owners of Colvic Watson's fitted IZUZU engines when they could not get partts.

Still plenty of spares and recon engines available for BMC 1500 engines

Amy body know what the difference between the BMC 1500 Diesel and the crank, bearings pistons and con rods og the normal BMC B series engine as the Nissan 1400 engine is basically the same as the BMC B series engine

Clearly the fuel system will be different
