Blue grease

Further to a reply I made to another post regarding greasing a propeller I suggested using the blue grease supplied by Volvo and it occurred to me that we have other blue grease on the boat I think it's harken grease so my question is is the colour specific to a type use for these greases as in transmission fluids etc or just a nice colour?

Webby may suggest a connection to ancient scots wearing a similar product to keep the midges at bay whilst fighting the invading Romans English and no voting peoples !

MaxProp recommend the same grease as that Blakes market for their seacocks

The Grease for a Kiwiprop is a NLGI no 2 grade - I use Mobil XHP222 which is blue.

The Volvo greases areropeller shaft grease 3809449, Grease 828250, Grease, Water jet 1161251, Low temperature grease 1161417. It is the last one, which is the Blue one. Volvo cunningly don't give specs, just recommended applications.

However, an NLGI 2 grease is a 'normal' grease, so I wouldn't get too het up about it.

There are lots of waterproof greases to choose from in that grade. Unless you are doing low temperature stuff, just stick to the norm.

Colour is not usually specific to a type of grease usage. Sometimes its down to the ingredients sometimes it's down to corporate branding. Polyglycols are quite often red but I have seen them several colours.
