Oh I do, dear, I certainly do. They just sort of convey that message of 'I belong to something impotant'
Met a young man at the marina only last night and he was asking about it, one thing led to another and before you know it he was asking about disposing of his old flares. I told him straight away not to be so silly, they might be old fashioned but they still looked good on him.

Sailing is still a snobs haven, always was and always will be.

[/ QUOTE ]

Rubbish. I've been at it more than 50 years in all kinds of boats and met an awful lot of people. There are certainly obnoxious people sailing as there are in every setting. Maybe there are some who do it "to be seen" or for some kind of status, but I don't know where they are, because I've not met them.

Are they all in the Solent, perhaps? Does sailing there give you a distorted vision of the sailing scene. No idea where you are based, but reading these forums does make me wonder about that place and its denizens. Happily, not representative of sailors as a whole, I think.

One thing I have learned - the attitudes people attribute to others invariably say more about them than about those to whom they attribute said attitudes.

I think you are contradicting yourself somewhat, but never mind........ /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nope. There are idiots and a**holes everywhere, including in the sailing world (I presume. I don't seem to meet many of them) That doesn't mean sailing is a "haven" for them any more than any other setting you could mention.

If you play tennis at your local club you will meet a different sort of person, I imagine, from those you might meet at the Hurlingham. That doesn't mean tennis is a "haven" for any particular type of person. Just that we are all different and birds of a feather tend to congregate. That says a lot about people and not much about the activity.

I imagine it's the same if you compare the Royal and Ancient with the local public links. But nobody would say golf in Scotland was a haven for the nobs. Quite the reverse.

Now I may be mistaken but the Union Flag quarter looks as if it's upside down. Is this a subtle comment on the state of the Welsh economy?

[/ QUOTE ]

It happens to be the obverse or seam side of a properly stitched ensign & the stripe width is affected by the stitched hems, but perhaps you don't sew & wouldn't know that?

Does SWMBO repair your sails/ clothes/ whippings then? In my day, most sailers needed to be able to sew as wives were generally not allowed to accompany crew members. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Nope, that's comparing apples and oranges. The Royal and Ancient don't have a golf course of their own - they play over the Old Course which is in fact a local public links. I believe it requires a handicap below a certain number, but otherwise anyone can tee off, provided they've paid their money.

Apart from objecting to the acronym SWMBO (whilst demanding obedience), my dearly beloved objects to having anything to do with boat maintenance. An example of my needlework is attached - the kite rather exploded during a wee squall and the sewn on tapes are neat but clearly visible.

No ensign visible 'cos we were racing at the time.

Still think you could have taken a little more care to keep the broader white diagonal uppermost at the hoist even on the "obverse" side

[/ QUOTE ]

Indeed. And anyone can berth in the Hamble, provided they've paid the money. Everyone sails on the same water, though.

The club is, I believe, a private club with quite a limited membership, a long history and some very grand premises (a bit like certain yacht clubs) I would guess that the members are, as a bunch, a little different in character from the people playing on their local links across Scotland.

People all over the world stratify themselves according to money and taste. This is neither an exclusively English characteristic nor one that is unusually prevalent in sailing. In my experience some of the poshest clubs are also the most helpful and welcoming. The most fun of all the "royals" is the Royal Cork, but I had a warm welcome at the Royal Corinthian in Burnham a little while ago, even though I'm not a member of any club myself (apart from the Cruising Association)

I only wear an ensign when abroad. No need or requirement to do so in home waters, although if other people do so, good luck to them.

Likewise, I served in the Army and am proud to display the ensign associated with it. It has nothing to do with class or snobbery.

Well said /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We had just moored at the Folly last Saturday when an old chap came down the pontoon and asked about our ensign. Turned out he was in the same Corps but we served many years apart. The ensign and its swords broke the ice and we had a long chat.

Just to correct an point earlier though, the club or association has the warrant, the owner a permit to fly.... now which side of the mast does the burgee fly from, oh and seniority for more than one, hmm tricky subject bit like mess dinner nights /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Don't knock our traditions or idiosyncrasies, or we will all end up like those scoundrels to the west who keep claiming independence every July /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
