Sitting here constructing pilotage plans for rocky bits I just wonder if it wouldnt be a lot easier if we just blew everything up so that there was a minimum depth at LAT of 5metres within a cable of the UK shoreline .. probably a lot cheaper for all concerned on the long term .. and a lot of fun getting there!

Not incompatible

Actually when you think about it we'll need a wee bit of power to peform this task.

disposal of nuclear armaments first lot blow up the west coast with an easterly wind .. that'll sort out the USA, then blow up the east coast with a west wind .. europe sorted.. good plan ..

Re: Not incompatible

and whilst we are about it we might as well blow up the north coast with a northerly wind - just to tidy things up ????

Re: Not incompatible

The government has a plan to put wind generators all around the 5 m contour so it will then be impossible to go aground anyway.

If they all had numbers on a typical passage plan would be like a join the dots puzzle.Small gaps would be left outside harbours with patrol boats collecting entry and exit fees.

Speed cameras will be attatched to every third one with a 2000 pound fine for exceeding 4.5 knots.

Special cameras will also be able to check dates on flares ,liferafts etc a schedule of fines to follow.

All funds raised will be used to fund a war with outer mongolia over their leaders refusal to pay the congestion charge when visiting london. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Strangley enough, this is also the opinion of SWMBO.

When I ask her to check something out, it appears to interfere with her doing her hair (which she insists on brushing before she comes on deck!!!)

As with everything it has been done. Ever been to the Thousand Islands on the St Lawerence River? Several Islands have very straight vertical edges next to the shipping lanes. You can still see one side of the holes where they put the explosives in.

Yip, its been done. The anchorage at Eilean Mor in the McCormaig Isles in the Sound of Jura had a troublesome rock in the middle of it. The army came along and "blew the f#cker up". Result? Three troublesome rocks...!

Yes but we need a more structured approach so tha the whole of Britain is made steep to. The Millions of tonnes of rock can be recycled to bolster coastal sea defences and build mountains in boring bits of Britain (like E Anglia). If there's any spare they can be made into worktops and isued to the homeless so they've got somewhere clean to eat their sandwiches.

Good idea Jimi - but can we extend it further (Libby Purves suggested redesigning the UK coastline in an article some years ago in YM) ? Her suggestion was for a canal/waterway behind Portland Bill. Mind would be to smooth out Start Point.

Any other suggestions ?

My 2 ideas would be to have a massive excavation in the Lyme Regis area so that there'd be a nice place to visit round about there and also nice Penzance to Hayle canal.

You are taking my friend and his daughter sailing this w/end I hope you don't intend to transport dynamite as well. You can't just go around blowing lumps out of the UK. Whilst it may help you to navigate safely blowing these rocks up would seriously deprive Mobos of somewhere to park their boats /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
This could also spark a serious debate on the 'butters forum about which type of anchor to use on the newly reduced obstruction, CQR, Delta, Fortress or fishermans.
Nahhhhh I say give the thought up and just sail round it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thinking of them all, but there's a couple I'd give priority to .. Pierre au Vraic at the end of the Swinge would be high on my list!

Or alternatively

Weejimi,
We, at Buttmaster HQ, have analysed your problem which is that you own an AWB and possess limited navigational expertise hence rocks would be a problem. However your suggested solution is simply not feasible, your matches would not light under water.

Now if you had a decent classic boat (DCB) your concerns would dimish as even if you hit rocks, as you inevitably would you'd bounce rather than sink. Rival Spirit is the lving proof of this hypothesis.

Hope this helps.

Re: Blow the f#ckers up!

We've been throwing 1000lb bombs and firing bullets at Garvie island off Cape Wrath for years. Its getting smaller and has developed a nice crack down the middle but it may take a while before we can move on to more troublesome rocks around the coast!
