Bloody French! (S C A L L O P S)

Re: Bloody French!

And supposing our brave fisherman tried the same tactics against the Frenchies coming over and hoovering up all our benthic resources, what would you say ? Have you seen the state of the seabed after a beam trawler has passed over it a dozen times ? Has the word 'sustainability' entered your consciousness ?

Even in an ironic post, you have lost the overview of how everyone should be protecting and nurturing a very precious natural resource. Good on the French for trying to gain the shellfish another few weeks to mature, and protect a local industry.

Would that Brexit enables us to look after our own fishing zones properly for the future

It's what happens when you try deprive people of their livelihood.... now imagine what will happen should some of the car factories depart and people lose their jobs to this madness?

This is not about protecting anything except thier own interests. The French Hoover up the sea's contents on a far larger scale than us. Including the seas off our coast.

What drivel

Since when have the French been able to claim sole fishing rights 40 miles off, when they are allowed to fish up to 6 miles off our beaches? What "natural resources", other than their own pockets, are they 'protecting'?

What "madness", what "livelihood"?
They are fishermen, not factory workers.

Re: Bloody French!

If its a matter of law then just let the matter proceed through the courts. No need for daft 'gun boat' diplomacy on either side. Storm in a tea cup.

Tell that to a fisherman being attacked whilst going about his lawful business.
They can fish up to 6 miles off our shores, so presumably its "lawfull" to do the same off theirs, even though in this case its 40 miles off.

Re: Bloody French!

I can't help but admire the French for getting off their derrieres and taking action against a blatant stupidity that allows others to fish when they can't. If only the apathetic Brits would do the same!
As for the damage caused by scallop dredgers, they should all be banned.

BBC says it was 12 miles off the French coast. Some stones were thrown - where on earth do they find stones 12miles off the coast?

While I agree with the principle of what you say, they are not the rules and this is not the way to deal with it. The Brits are acting leagally under current rules and the French are acting like Somalian pirates.

Re: Bloody French!

The damage done to the seabed when scallop trawling is consideable leaving a virtual desert which takes years to recover.
This happens every year in the Irish Sea particuarly off Cardigan Bay, yet the Welsh Assembly seem to ignore the problem and have done nothing to deter it.

Re: Bloody French!

This is simply a bureaucratic cock up (French and British) where politicians have failed to sort out a deal for 2018/19 as has previously happened. French and British fishermen both worry that they will lose out in the ensuing vacuum. So they commence small-scale hostilities. Quick as wink we see bystanders calling for the respective navies to intervene. Military conflict instead of sorting out incompetent politicians like Bumbling Boris and their equally incompetent administrators? Wow!
