As it is not yet sailing weather I have decided to completely revamp my website and blog for the coming years sailing.

It is time to try and educate myself in the dark art of web design so I was thinking of using Word Press which others seem to swear by.

A couple of hopefully simple questions.

1) Is word press easy to learn for a beginner.

2) Is it better to use a paid hosting website or a free one.

Thanks for any replies.

I currently use word press - but hosted on a private server so that I have control over any advertising

I did set up a protest website about a planning permission for an airfield

it was an absolute doddle and free

you can embed images and videos

so if you do not care what adverts are placed besides your bon mot then do the freemans

Thanks Dylan,
I hate to see adverts on a site so I would hate to have them on my own.

I've used Moonfruit to make 4 websites, each to sell a boat. It's easy but the sites are a bit slow to load. Just now started using Wordpress & it is a bit more difficult to do the basics but still quite easy to start a basic blog site. I would say you get much much better results & you can go on to do so much more with Wordpress so go with that, definitely if it's a blog...

I you are going to update your blog from a traditional browser interface then there are many tools much easier to use than Wordpress. On the other hand, if you want to blog from a phone or other device then Wordpress is the way to go.

It is also much more customisable, but with that can come complication, so it depends on how quickly you can learn.

I suggest you built a small site in a couple of different tools. It should only take a short while with each. After a few hours work you should have several blogsites done and you will know which tool is better for you, not what works best for others with different equipment and skill levels.

Blogspot works for me. Not as flexible as Wordpress but less complex. Good integration with Google+ albums (aka Picassa web albums) which we were already using as a communal photo album anyway

As you can see from the blog address below, we use wordpress for our blog. It's pretty intuative to use, has more than enough space for pictures and is free. We did cheat a bit as my son in law is in the website business and he helped us set up the blog in the first place but it really isn't that difficult. If you want to put video or audio into your blog, then you have to upgrade but we've never felt the need to do so.

I used Moonfruit once, but it was very slow and a bit limiting.

Then I moved onto blogspot which is easy and as it's owned by Google it integrates really well with Youtube.
I didn't really look at wordpress but may if I do more than diarise my activities. It's only for me and some friends really.

Hey,
I am on a boat and occasionally have some time to learn a few new tricks providing I can find a few intact brain cells to attach the information to.
I think I will use the host I am currently with as it allows a lot more flexibility.
I have been playing around with word press this morning and the biggest problem is it's flexibility. It just does too much which can become confusing.

I have been working with word press all day and I haven't got anywhere yet. It is good and I am sure if I look hard enough it will connect with my auto pilot and also tie a few bowlines as well. As for making a new site... well I will get there well before I ever become a competent skipper.
The good news is that it is free and there are so many add on's

Wordpress drove me mad so I used Blogger to run alongside my main website.

Easy to use and lots of variations. Here's mine http://jryachts.blogspot.co.uk/

I found it straightforward and simple to learn

I'm using wordpress since three years now. At the beginning, I didn't know anything about making websites etc., but wordpress was really easy to understand and develop our site. Can only recommend it.

It occurred to me that I ought to give Wordpress a fair go having not actually tried it out

That lasted about a minute and a half at which point I discovered it would cost me $30 to be allowed to customise the header picture on my blog. Thanks, but no thanks since that is free (like everything else) on Blogger

In fact, to match, let alone exceed, the free capabilities of Blogger is a premium (and thus chargeable) product with Wordpress (although without doubt if you've the time, inclination and money Wordpress is the more capable product)

We used wordpress for a couple of years but for me it was far too complicated, and we cancelled the accounts. Then my wife found 'weebly' and we were both able to create our own websites very easily. In fact it is the simplicity which is the attraction for us.

Michael.

I use WordPress however host this on a privately run server. Easy to set up with plenty of themes to choose from if you don't want to design the precise layout yourself.
As this runs on a private server, I don't have to put up with adverts or extra costs for extra customisation.
The plugins are fantastic as they let you do all sorts.
