When referring to blocks some chandlers like to say 8 to 10mm rope etc. others will say size 2, 3 or 4 for example.

Would someone please be kind enough to tell me the conversion from size to rope diametre.

Thank you in advance......

Thank you for that, it is easy when in a shop but buying on line makes it more scientific so to speak.

Julian,

what blocks are you looking at?

Just that the difference in standard blocks from Barton & ball bearing blocks is small enough to go for the ball bearing blocks all the time.

I even use the ball bearing blocks as guides.

barton do a good catalogue which is all blocks travellers track, etc. etc. not quite as technical as the Lewmar catalogue but comprehensive.

The Barton block sizes are:

Standard blocks
block 1 30mm sheave 8mm line
block 2 35mm sheave 10mm line
block 3 45mm sheave 10mm line
block 4 58mm sheave 12mm line

Cruiser blocks
block 5 54mm sheave 12mm line
block 6 63mm sheave 12mm line
block 7 70mm sheave 14mm line

They then go onto high load blocks up to 18mm rope.
I have got quite a lot of barton gear from various chandlers to refit Shady & have been impressed with their kit. The boomstrut is a great bit of engineering easy to fit & works.

The web site is:
www.bartonmarine.com
If you go there you also get block loads etc. also a tech help email.

have fun.

poter.

All I am after are a couple of 8mm or size 1 cheek blocks to build a lazy jack system while my mast is down next weekend.

I don't think I need a ball bearing raced block as 90% of the time it will be sat static.

I appreciate your help though
