The spinnaker halyard on my boat ( Dehler 31)is fed through a loose free running block just above the shackle for the head . Does anybody know the purpose.
Thanks

Because in use the halyard and head of the spinnaker lead at wide angles from the axis of the boat, virtually 90 degrees each side. Without the top block the halyard would bear heavily on the cheeks of the sheave, causing its spindle to wear rapidly and serious chafe of the halyard.
