My Snapdragon 747's YSE8 hasnt run in over 10 years. The engine seems to have spent a fair bit of time sitting in 4" water due to a fuel filler pipe not being sealed.
I've now fitted a head gasket (old one corroded away where it looks like water sat) and have the engine out of the boat fitted in a test bed.
A question.. when i loosen the pipe at the injector and turn the (decompressed) engine over how long should it take before i see fuel coming out of the now empty pipe?
I've got a fairly good battery fitted but it seems to be taking a long time for any fuel to come through.

It can take a surprisingly long time to clear the air from the system. Bear in mind that the injector pump delivers a very small quantity of fuel on every second revolution of the engine. This can take a long time to fill the pipework.

if you slacken the large nut on the fuel injection unit below and to the right of the injector fuel will flow quickly this is how i blead my YSE8

Seems to be bled, now just wont start

Right, we seem to have got the fuel bled (some fuel now coming out the return pipe at the top of the injector) but will not start.
Remember i mentioned it hasnt run in 10yrs? I just did when i looked at the colour of the fuel and thought 'is that normal'? I've been trying to use fuel thats been sat in the tank for 10 years or more and although it doesnt appear to have diesel bug it looks a bit dark to me.

I would have got some diesel earlier but every fuel can i have is full of either petrol, 2 stroke oil or different mixes of both!

Will the age of the fuel make a significant impact?

Please forgive some basic questions, i've only just got into diesel after many years of automotive and outboard petrolheadery

not sure about diesel bug, but red diesel looks a little like rose wine IMHO. Any darker sounds susoicious. And bear in mind that the last thing you want is to pull crud through the system. i'd drain the lot from the bottom of the tank and if there's a bit left over in the tank suck it out with an oil extractor pump. you do have new filters fitted don't you?

Gave in and bought a gallon of Texacos finest. New stuff has a green tint to it, the old stuff was somewhere between Dulux burnt orange and British Leyland Harvest Gold.

I think we're onto something here but another question - How much fuel is going to need purging through the pump, high pressure pipe and injector before the cylinder head gets to see it?

Yse require full throttle to start.

It sounds as if you may not have the manual, which describes very clearly how to bleed it. It is available as a PDF. Contact me if you can't find it by a search on here.

I rebuilt my ysm which now runs very clean, so it is worth the bother.

Good luck.

In one of those D'oh moments you made me realise i do have the manual but didnt read it. I think i wasnt bleeding the injector pump properly. I'll be trying what the manual says and reporting back. (Probably Tuesday evening if i get the planned early finish)

Thanks & regards

once you have sorted the diesel out inc new filters you could also squirt a little oil into the cylinder VIA the air intake , you.will need to undo the two bolts or is it three. if its stood a while the piston rings will be dry and you will not get enough compression. the oil will sort this out.
