I have a pair of 1991 Yamaha 40 longshafts, remote controlled. One developed a fault with the hydraulic seals in the PT&T unit. I've had the unit serviced (off the boat) and I'm now struggling to refill/bleed.

The manual suggests lifting the engine, filling, refitting plug, release pressure screw, lower, raise, tighten relief screw and repeat the process.

Each time I do this and try to refill, I hear air coming out, and then the hydraulic fluid I've just added seems to come back out as well.

Does anyone have the exact procedure or can offer any advice?

Cheers.

I would fill then use the trim pump itself to raise and lower the leg a few times then raise and fill again as neccessary, it should bleed out this way.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'll give that a go. At the moment I just seem to be pouring hydraulic oil all over the drive.

That seemed to wrk, cheers. It seems that the air mixes with the oil, frothing up. If you leave it after moving the leg up and down, then open the screw slowly, the air comes out without the oil. A bit like a bottle of pop.
