Blackwater - Yarmouth tips

Just planning to help move a small sailing boat from the Blackwater to Yarmouth and into the Yare this coming weekend.

Very familiar with the E. Coast for years but have not sailed it in the 18 months. Anything to look out for?

Orford light no longer - I know about.

Also best chart for beyond Orford and Yarmouth entrance - I can't put my hands on the one I had.

My best tip for Blackwater to Yarmouth is avoid Yarmouth!

Otherwise - book bridge lift at Yarmouth in advance. Try to arrive such that you don't need to stay overnight on the town quay wall. If you do take fender board and hard drink.

Seem to recall some wave rider buoys off Southwold in the NtMs. It will be listed in the Temporary Notices. To get an overview of the permanent changes between Blakeney and Orford Ness go to the Area listing (top button) on http://www.crossingthethamesestuary.com/page9.html. I did these area lists so people doing different journeys to normal, out of their usual cruising areas can review what has taken place. I think if memory is right, Southwold Light changed its characteristics as well.

As to charts. UKHO folio 5614 is very detailed for this passage. You get 25 charts in the folio and in particular you get Orford Ness to Benacre Ness (just short of Lowestoft), Approaches to Lowestoft and Lowestoft to Winterton Ness (nr Sea Palling)., Approaches to Great Yarmouth (in Harbour) and Great Yarmouth haven so only five charts of use to you for nearly £44.30. Nice scale though. Imray's folio only goes as far as Lowestoft.

At the risk of being shot down in flames - I have always found the Imray chart C28 perfectly satisfactory for my jaunts between the Orwell and that neck of the woods - (eg Southwold and Lowestoft).
