Black stain

Thanks, I tried oxalic, not much result, so tried again a bit stronger, seems to have lifted some of it. The spars are on an antique, not highly primped, boat, and I don't like the shiny yellow of varnished finish. So I might go for a stain, dull and dark would be my preference (Old fella here says 'thin down some tar') some sort of oil maybe?
Any ideas?
I have creosote.......
It's a balanced lug, so the varnish gets knocked off where the spars cross the mast. I can get leather offcuts for protection.

I was repairing/replacing a bookshelf fiddle rail on one of the church pews, and used instant coffee to darken down the new wood to match the old, prior to varnishing.
