I have a couple of Musto sailing jackets - fairly old but handy to keep on the boat for visitors etc.

Unfortunately they have developed black "mould" spots all over the red / white fabric - these are small spots that seem to be in the "weave"

Do any of you practical guys have a suggestion to remove the spots without ruining the waterproof nature of the jackets?

Very, very cautious use of a very dilute chlorine bleach solution should kill it but wont remove the black spots.

Following a recommendation on here I tried an Oxi-action bleach and washing with a bio detergent on a shower curtain. It was unsuccessful. You'll not want to wash a waterproof in bio detergent anyway.

I suspect that washing in any kind of detergent will shorten the life of the waterproofing. The only thing we've used that gets close to working is the stain devil for mildew. SWMBO used it on the companion way curtain (heavy cotton) and it is better, but still distinctly freckled.

If they are old enough to have developed mould, they could probably do with reproofing anyway - give them a good wash, then apply a proper proofing fluid - should be able to get something suitable from a good rambler's store.
