So, quite unsuspectingly, I opened a right can of worms...

I sold my SeaHog Hunter earlier in the year, including a bomb-proof mid 80's 2-cyl 55Hp Evinrude. It started first time, every time, and only let me down once in 3 years, and that was my fault. Anyway, I buy a 2 or 3 year old SeaHog SeaLord, new trailer and no engine. No worries I think, I can get hold on a second hand outboard for a reasonable amount of money - no problem.

So here I am, almost 4 months later, the boat is still on the driveway, and only now have I managed to track down a reasonably priced, not thrashed, not 30 years old, 55hp Suzuki outboard, with a warranty!

What is going on? Almost 1 thousand quid for a early 70's Mercury Blue Band, approaching 2 plus grand for anything earier than 1990! Anything between 3 and 7 thousand for a new 50 - 90Hp outboard!

There seem to be a lot of folks out there cashing in the the availability of decent second hand engines. It was not like this 3 years ago. What is going on!

Sorry, end of rant!

Dave.

There's normaly loads on boatsandoutboards have you looked there. My local Free ads normaly has a few large engines every week. I think the big problem is who owns the lump there are iffy toerags nicking engines all the time . I'd check with the police re serial numbers before parting with dosh tell em you want to do that before going 200 miles to see it.

Cheers

I can tell you whats going on....

The recent drive by the manufacturers of outboards into 4 stroke rather than 2 stroke has driven new prices up. Fact is that 2 stroke motors make better outboards (OK, I've started an argument now!) than 4 stroke and as such they are now more difficult to get hold of, especially in the 50-100HP bracket.

I have tried Loot, Exchange & Mart, BoatsAndOutboards, Reesmarine.... (etc etc etc). You are quite right, loads of engines, but a nondescript past and unknown vendors. Plus, most of them are sityuated at one end of the country or the other.

I suppose its better the devil you know. Bite the bullet and pay a little over the odds for an engine from a reputable dealer (if you can find one - an engine that is, or a reputable dealer come to think of it).

Anyway, the 55Hp gets fitted on Saturday, so god help the Makerel and Great White Sharks off Anglesey on Sunday.

You jammy git
I'm hoping to get to Anglesey later this week but I've opened up the front wall and have to get a door and window fitted before I can go play. Then hook the toy boat up, drag it there set up camp re misses and small sprog and down to Bulls bay for the first trip out. The bass were coming in a few weeks ago around the beaches and in the straights so it should be good for you.
Cheers
