Bløødy NASA wind cups gone AGAIN.

Can you buy them by the dozen yet?!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif These really are total crap. I've only fitted one of them - to a friend's boats, against my strenuous advice - and it too lost it's cups in a modest puff or two of wind. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

He replaced the thing, it broke again, so he cut his losses and bought a Raymarine ST60. Talk about the ridiculous to the sublime!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Was it the newer style unit (white) or the old black one?

Our old one has lost its cups (12 months ago - can sail without them!) but its direction magents have now also gone - it is 11 years old though. I bought a replacement unit complete (white one) - apparently better built - £100ish - this is the only money we've spent on the Nasa instruments and will be the last I spend on the wind unit - if it breaks again I'll be reverting to the whetted finger I've used for many a year before now!!

Nah! My friend's was the old black effort. I didn't know they chnaged the colours, so let's hope they've changed the quality and reliability as well.

It's strange that the rest of the stuff, while cheap and cheerful, does seem so much better. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I think I'll stick to my RM ST60 suite. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Agreed - the rest seems fine; Navtex, depth, GPS repeater, (speed will be ok when I put new magnets in the transducer!).

I think they re-designed the head unit when they changed the colour - the spindle that holds the cups is certainly a different size so hopefully its been improved!

I have the NASA target system fitted to a boat ive just purchased and aswell as the cups being broken can get the speed/log transducer to register, If I Spin or blow the paddles should it register straight away on the display screen

I have had a nasa wind unit for 2 years and it is a white one. It was underreading recently so chatted with them at Excel and they agreed to have a look. My rotary bit was held in place by a not visually encouraging circlip thing - it looked very cheap. they have changed recently (white unit still) to a screw on unit with nylon locking bush - at least it looks the job. The underreading problem went away and so far, so good.

yes you are right i would use stonger words i went so far as to buy a new head unit so as to be able to fit the new type of cups they now have a very small nylock nut and wesher holding them on instead of the small clip that was three years ago and i have already lost three sets of cups and have another set ready to fit or not?.fit for purpouse i dont think so maybee one day one of us will take some action against the maker.Kieron

[/ QUOTE ]The most logical action people can take is not to buy the wretched stuff! The complaints have been around for ages, but people still keep buying it because it's cheap. Thankfully, I'm too poor to buy cheap goods.

yes you should be able to easily blow the paddle wheel up to 10 knots when it is out of the water. And yes the indication should be instant.

I would agree that wind gear at the mast top is so easy to buy and so difficult to keep serviceable. (same also for water speed paddles)

Oh well having not being the next in line to the throne or the nephew of sir richard bransen I will just have to make do and fix what I have for this year (thanx for yor comments PVB).
If anyone is in need for NASA parts I have found a very cheap source and will be putting in a order on monday 1 april 2008 plpease let me know asap can give a price

I posted on the same subject a couple of weeks ago re a Clipper Wind - first time I had lost any. Brought some replacement cups, but when I got up the mast, found that the spindle itself had sheared off (poss in relaunch), so had to send the whole head unit back to NASA. They replaced all of the unit below the wind vane (white for old black), fitted the new cups set which I had already bought and put in a new longer piece of cable as I had cut it very short on removal from the mast head. Dealt with within the week and total charge , including return postage,£21, which personally I think was bloody good, so credit where credit is due!

Had the same problem so threw it away and replaced it with a Windex manual wind indicator. I do not miss having wind speed. I can tell when I need to reef without it!
