Any new thinking on keeping starlings et al from sh**ting all over boats? I have tried CDs Owls, hawks, snakes and a cat to no avail.

Latest idea applied today with zero expectations of success. I strapped a Mole Scarer to the rigging. The emitted sounds seem to resonate all through the boat. Batteries supposed to last 6 months. Just demonstrates how mad I am. £19.99 for 2 from local garden centre.

Any new ideas out there? Please?

Does the reverse work?

I have terrible trouble with mole hills these last 2 years.

Have tried the sonic mole scarers, as well as spraying some sort of amonia compound around, all to no avail.

Perhaps I should try CDs and owls etc. next?

Tried the lot myself. I have now made two "covers" out of pea netting, edged with a strip of fabric so they do not get too badly tangled. One covers the boat aft of the mast, the other forward. They are tied to the guardrails/shrouds in such a way as to be suspended above all of the boat structure, to achieve this you may have to fix to the boom. Most of the time I only use the aft job - till things get really bad.
It is a pain fitting them but I would rather spend ten minutes doing that, than half an hour with seagull snot. Brian.

you told me to put bread on the boat next to me /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Works like a charm /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

cheers Joe

Oh yes, no more moles in the garden since we used the sonic things. However, there will be hell to pay when she finds I have nicked them from her rose beds and the little devils return.

What about a shotgun? ............works for me! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Try and put your boat next to one with a taller mast! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Seems to be working for me. My neighbour comes down to his boat regularly to find it covered in bird poo. There's hardly any on mine. He comments on how well I keep my decks clean. Don't have the heart to let on! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I’m reliably informed that a sparrow hawk in the vicinity will do the trick, know any local bird of prey enthusiasts?

Suffered in a big way until this year. Several fising boats took mooring close to mine. All the sh*tehawks now seem to prefer them and leave me alone. Magic!

They tried a Harris hawk at Hythe during the elderberry season, it worked for about 10 minutes. Starlings are smart birds! I was warned about seagull effluent at Brixham but I have to say it's a thousand times better than Hythe. Maybe a nearby fishing boat is the answer.

The Westerly next door went for the awning option, made from proper canvas mounted about a foot above the deck, I think it would be worthwhile in the long run.

Trouble is, the buggers sit on mast tops and spreaders and drop it everywhere as boat heels in the wind. Rabs latest success is two black heavy duty bin-bags, shredded in strips to flap around at hounds and crane. They dont like it up there!.

A Council here in Ireland employed a local falconer to show up at the landfill and frighten the seagulls. Worked fine as long as he was there. Trouble was they learned they to watch for his white van coming down the approach roads and descended when he left.
