It looks like I have a diesel bug (black/caramel gooey stuff in the bottom of the Racor filters).

What biocide do you recommend?
And where can I get it mail order to the South of France?

Ideally it should also break down the existing sludge as my tanks are very difficult to get at so emptying and washing out is not an option!

Thanks in advance for your expert advice.

There was a test in PBO a few years ago where Grotamar71 and Marine16 came out well ahead of the competition. The PBO test is on the Marine16 website here (pdf file).

I used Grotamar71 to treat some bug-infested diesel as I could get it locally from Mailspeed. No complaints, but as I cleaned the tank out, and replaced a lot of the hoses at the same time, it's not really a test.

Maybe the PBO article will give you some pointers?

I would be a trifle careful about that PBO test as it later came to light that the lab doing the testing was part of a group that manufactured the biocides that were recomended .I can't recall whether PBO acknowledged this. They will probably come on the forum & let you (& me) know.

I don't think there was ever any secret about this, but I recall a lot of debate about it on here at the time. I nearly put a rider about this into my first reply, but thought "nah, it's all died down now...." /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

FWIW, my personal opinion was (and is) that the results of the tests weren't compromised by this, but it's as well to point it out so that others can make their own minds up.
