Does anyone know if biodiesel at a 50/50 mix with red diesel can be used in Volvo engines?

You had best check with Volvo. This sounds an unusual mix. Std road diesel is 2.5 to 5% bio, and I guess red diesel is similar. I think pretty much all diesels are happy with this mix. As you increase the vol of bio in the mix, then things like fuel hoses, seals etc are going to be of concern. Bio fuel is more agressive on the rubber components.

Do not use biodiesel in a boat. It contains water! This makes animals!I think volvo says no biodiesel on new engines! Even avoid 5% bio!

From 1/1/2011 the standard for red diesel changes (from BS2869:1988 to BS 2869:2006) and what this means is a more highly refined fuel much closer to (but not the same) as white with a much lower sulpur content, and the new standard permits up to 5% bio. So you may end up with B5 red whether you like it or not next year..
In any case Volvo are quite happy about 5% Bio. See here for their take on what can be used. There are some caveats if you use bio at 50%!

Not really into biodiesel are they. At another section of their website they describe biodiesel as being a form of ethanol. They also describe lubrication problems being caused by their (biodiesels)higher "boiling point" They also don't have moisture in them when they are produced, but do tend to be hydophillic and oxidise in the fuel tank. Long term storage is a problem.
