I used to repair bino's and feel I should point out that if you drop them and they go out of alignment, it is a straightforward job to get them re-collimated. I hate to think of people throwing away perfectly good binoculars just because they see two images through them.
You could always look after them, like any other optical equipment. And yes, a monocular is a good alternative, basically a modern equivalent to a telescope. (And historically we've done alright with telescopes!)
