My elderly Bresser bins finally went to a watery grave today /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Need suggestions replacement. Built in compass essential!!
I recently bought an ex-display pair of Steiners from the London Camera Exchange at half price. (Brilliant bins!) They also had a pair of ex-display Commanders 7x50 for £200. As new, in the box. No good for you as they don't have a compass, but someone might be interested....
I have a pair of steiners with compass and find the optics on them superb but check that you are happy with the use of the compass as we find ours difficult to read.
I strongly second Monk Optics, whether buying their own brand or another.
When I enquired they sent me a pair of their own brand and a pair of the equivalent Fujinon for me to compare, and only charged me for one pair. When I opted for the Fujinon they refunded the difference. They were also fantastic to talk to on the phone. All in all one of my better buying experiences.
I'll strongly "third" Monk Optics. Perfectly servicable bins that "do what it says on the box" - "no hassle" staff, easy to talk to and not too hard to pay. Why pay for a Rolls Royce if all you need is a BMW or Merc? Vanity?, oneupmanship?, snob value? - Bølløx to that boats always need money spent on them so why throw it away.
If you want a real pair of "marine" bins - go for Barr & Stroud if you can find them and be prepared to take out a second mortgage.

That is exactly what I mean - If you find bins you personally like and they do what you want then go for them even if they are only £50 if they work and do what you want - why waste money? Snob value?

Fujinons are fantastic, if expensive bins. They are guaranteed for life (genuinely) can be dropped, are waterproff etc etc. I think mine are the FMTRX's that don't have a compass and I've had them for about 12 years and well over 40K miles.
Superb optics (recommended and bought from Monk Optics) BUT they are heavy, so can make your arms ache if holding them for longish periods.
Nikon/cheap those two words are incompatible! Lens are superb, and great even at night. No idea how much as brother bought them for me from Japan as a present 30 years ago.
Talbot you are correct. Nikon make the best binoculars. One of the best websites for binocular reviews is BVD Online. You will see there that Nikon are the reference standard in 3 out of 4 catagories. They are superior to Zeiss, Svarovski and Leitz. I'm afraid Monk, Steiner, etc
are not in the same league. Like the chinese facories Nikon make several grades at different prices. If you want a good value binocular avoid roof prism (the straight tube type) and go for a porro prism (the Z bend in the tube type) - these cost less to make for the same optical standard.

[/ QUOTE ]I guess you have never used Barr & Stroud bins then? If you had you would not make such a rash statement. B&S make, without question, some of the worlds fines optics - way ahead of and superior to Zeiss, Svarovski, Leitz, Monk, Steiner, Canon and I'm afraid Nikon Mind you they are not made for the civilian market /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif so they can be difficult to find /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif but they are available.
