Binoculars with rangefinder - Are they any good and how do they work?

You can get binocular rangefinders where you don't need to know the height of the object. Would be worth it just to see his face when he unwrapped his pressie....

Laser rangefinder

Thats what I said, its simple triangulation, knowing the height of the target.
So, what is different about a laser one?

The height of the object does not matter, the rangefinder transmits a beam which is reflected off the object you are ranging and the receiver in the rangefinder picks up the reflected beam and calculates the distance. The better quality ones are +/- 1 metre at 600 metres. I personally use a Nikon for range finding when shooting long distance.

Rangefinders

Range finders were bought for the World saing Championships here in Fremantle last year. They were used to set course leg lengths along with GPS. They seemed to workl OK but I could not confirm they used laser but were made for the golf business. olewill

I have a set of XM binos' with compass and 'known height' rangefinder.

They work very well, with good damping.

I'm not impressed by the build quality though, a minor trim ring soon fell off.

I've never bothered with the rangefinder function but I'm glad to have it as Plan Z.

Talking of lasers etc is missing the OP's point I feel, and cost is going to escalate; if laser, why not have image stabilisation, night vision...!
