Following a the advice from a previous post here - I've purchased some Bilgex to clean the engine compartment. My question is (as the labels disappeared) - how do you use it to clean the engine compartment - and can you use it on the engine??

As a recommender of Bilgex i feel I must respond.

the intelligent thing to do is go into the chandlers and read what it says on a new tin - no need to buy it - just imitate the lunchtime browsers at WH Smiths .

Failing that mix it with water in a bucket and use it to wash stuff.

For engine surfaces my own choice is to
1. wash down with parafin
2. wash down with Hammerite thinners
3. paint with light blue hammerite - really looks good and for several years you can wipe th eengine with a rag to get it clean

Bilgex solution in the bilge for a couple of hours on a trip will clean out the smells ( pump out bilge first and dispose of mucky solution properly) then put clean solution in for the trip

Err, why? although paraffin is inflamable, Hammerite thinners isn't and by the time you've pumped the resulting cack out of the bilge with some water it'll all be gone!
I've just washed one of my engines down first with Paraffin and then Gunk, hose off with water run engine and it's fine. Paraffin has a reasonably high flashpoint, hence the meths you use to start a Primus.
If you really don't like paraffin use diesel fuel, but wear gloves as it triggers a dermatalogical reaction in a lot of people, it also stinks, worse than Paraffin/Gunk!

Just use the bulgex.
Dilute about one pint about 10:1 in water. Use a stiff paint brush to paint the bulgex on the engine and on anywhere else you wish to clean. When you have done this mix a 100:1 solution of bilgex in a bucket and just pour it over everything.
Then take dry cloths and wipe the engine and everywhere else. You will be surprised at the results.

We used to do this weekly to a collection of well worn and smokey VP engines in an inland hire fleet.
