Often enterprising and innovative members of this forum come up with alternatives to proprietary brands of cleaners (ie Oxalic acid as an alternative to Y10 etc.) which I enjoy trying out and saving a few quid in the process !!

Any thoughts/ideas about cleaning out the bilge?

One tingto consider is how you will dispose of the material you choose to use.

If its going into the water then perhaps it should be biodegradable and non toxic to marine life

They claim Bilgex to be biodegradable!

Gunk, buy it at a motor factors.

I dont tip mine overboard when finished, I use a Pela to suck it out then dispose of it at a civic amenity site.

I knew a bloke who put a solution of water and fairy liquid in the bilge and left it for a couple of weeks, using the boat regularly, it was almost like new when I saw it.

For that delicate Eau de Vieux Gas-Oil aroma that can permeate a boat for months after a diesel leak, the best thing I've found is Bio clean, www.simplybio.com.

It contains bacteria that digest organic compounds. Throw it in the bilges with a bucket of water and leave it to slosh around for a week. The result can be pumped overboard with a clear conscience.

problem is, bilgex 'perfume' brings tears to yer eyes weeks after it's been applied.
I think it depends on what the original contaminant is, but tend to agree with washing up liquid - although the aqua-prefects will slipper you for using it.

Use Ecover washing up liquid, keeps everyone happy....the skinflints and the eco warriors

True. IMO it smells worse than the diesel you might be trying to clean up!
