But to fit it, you need to grind the existing surface back to provide a key. If it isn't done before the original cures, gel won't stick, so bilge paint is a better option.
If you're convinced raw polyester grp is permeable, then gel-coat won't help, as it's basically polyester with talc. I don't necessarily agree that it's permeable, but if you wanted to paint it, then a two-pack LPU will give enhanced protection to the grp. I'd use a tradename industrial coating rather than one of the popular marine retail brands as price is significantly higher in the retail products.
Thanks for that advice. My own experience with built-in GRP tanks leads me to believe it is permeable and others have agreed. But presumably gel coat works on the outside or is it all down to my poor layup?
