Need to install decent bilge pump on my Pedro. Seen type that sense water by switching on every two minutes or whatever but dont fancy those cos dont want to leave boat on shore power when away. Any one have suggestions for really good flowrate pumps/floatswitch setups?

PS for Haydn....bilge in this case refers to area where unwanted water collects in bottom of boat. No doubt you will insert irrelevant verbal variety.........

You sinking then!! Now look, you can hae a bilge pump and a float switch, though why you have not already got one beats me. It will go off when the water reaches a certain level. Now if you got a leak, it will go off more often and flatten your batteries if left to long, else you have shore power. Well thats what most ordinary folks do anyway, however being as it's you, have you thought of a wind mill arangement conected to a big water wheel with buckets attatched feeding from your your bilge. A lump of old gutter pipe from near the top of the wheel would direct the offending water over the side and use no electric at all...../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

See what ones are recommended for your boat and then get bigger ones!. Lots of them and at least 2 manual ones and two big leccy ones that are over rated for the boat and add 2 big buckets as well. Just to be on the safe side. Pant curdling experience tells me that whats rated for the job is woefully undersized.

Minimum I would get is the Sahara 500 all in one easy to install and good quality from Attwood. Any problems and they replace it no questions asked.

I need a new one of those Whale gusher 10 thingies I think. Mines busted and the captivated nuts just go round and round but cant get a spanner on. Any how,I checked the valvr thingys on each end, they seem ok, but something seemed to go SNAP in the middle. It has a very long hose on the end. Dont think it will reach Tony though!!

Got 2 Jabsco diaphram ones on mine, self priming, big capacity with large bore pipes and a strum box. the pumps are located high up for access and ease of cleaning. They can be operated manually from the helm, but are wired with an automatic switch that closes the cicuit when two contacts become wet.
I have seen the arrangement that Hadyn has suggested you use and i would'nt advise that, it takes up so much room in Mucky's cockpit, and it looks to have become blocked with Blackpudding.

"Any problems and they replace it no questions asked." Without being pedantic, thats not a lot of use if yer boat has sunk cos the pump had a prob!

The big attwoods work well, flow not reduced as much as some when actually installed with a bit of lift and some hose.

Got a genuine 20gpm (uk) with 28mm hose out of one on my last boat.

Plastimo do them, or any chandler that deals with marathon leisure.

Higher flow rates need a Rule, but the hose size can reach 50mm.
