Aware of one in a boat recently and it had blocked up and thus made the auto bilge pump useless. Is there perhaps a new requirement to have these fitted?

Yes BSS wise on inland waterways. In place of a dedicated engine tray to catch oil and fuel spills, you can opt to fit one of these.
