Bilge pump activation warning systems. Advice appreciated.

Having read the threads concerning the level of insurance cover should my boat sink on its mooring, and being insured with Haven Knox Johnson it does give some cause for concern should the boat take on water due to failure of sea cocks, prop glands or other bits. I maintain my boat to a pretty good level, servicing all routine items and checking hoses periodically, in fact when recently servicing my Volvo 63P’s I was advised by a friendly marina manager to check the raw water hoses from the heat exchanger to the rear mounted oil cooler as apparently these are prone to fail where they cross the rear engine mounting bracket due to interference. Low and behold when I checked the hoses on both engines were nearly worn through. Point is I check all hoses and missed these as the damage can barely be seen unless you are looking for it, to see the full extent of damage you have to remove the hose. Had they have split it would have been a major engine overheat problem pretty quickly, with all the consequences. So I guess we are all at risk unless the engine power train is known throughout.
This has made me think that prevention is better than cure and I now want to install a bilge water warning system working either independently of the bilge pumps or with them. Should the pumps activate for a given length of time continuously or water were to rise to a pre determined level in the bilges I would receive a message alert via email or phone to say water is there and rising. At least this would give the opportunity to deal with it pretty swiftly.
I see on the web there are various systems available doing just what I want, has anybody installed one of the systems and able to provide some feed back before I purchase, also whether the systems independent of bilge pumps are preferred? All comments appreciated.
PS Anyone with Volvo 63P’s should check these hoses periodically. When replacing mine I fitted a protective piece around the hose locally to prevent this from happening again.
 
I installed a £45 gprs home alarm on my boat from eBay. It has several wired and wireless inputs that send a text when triggered. I also have a field effect sensor auto bilge pump linked to it so it is useful to know if that has activated. Loads of wireless sensors for fire gas pir etc are available. All runs off 12v

It also links up to my fridge so I text the boat "fridge on" and the ice is ready when I get to it on the weekend.

But am also in the middle of installing a GSM alarm system which will text me if, amongst other things, a bilge pump is activated.

In terms of value, which I class as benefit vs cost, they're both rated as huge.

I guess the gsm alone would do, but I fitted the bilgewatch a couple of years ago and it really is excellent.
To know how many times a pump has been activated since you left the boat is very useful.
Especially as I have non drip shaft seals and expect it to be zero all being well.

Without it, how would you know?

If the bilge level is the same when you arrive as when you left it, how do you know if:-

a) it's because it hasn't pumped, or
b) because it's pumped 6 times and returned the level down to the same point?

There's always that nagging doubt...
 
My concern of such things has also increased considerably since the issues around who covers what when it comes to marine insurance have been discussed, combined with the fact that I had a failed float switch and leaking shaft seal the last time I visited the boat. The Bilgewatch 8 looks great, but not so useful if you are away from the boat for weeks at a time, coupled with GSM and having the ability to query activity remotely would make it a 'must buy' for me.

Bikerwookie, would you be kind enough to post a few links to the some of the items you've purchased to design your bespoke solution please?

It's not the cheapest gizmo out there but I'd suggest you look at www.yacht-sentinel.com

I have used these for years and use on my current boat. The new App makes it particularly easy to use via smartphone. The thing can be bought with its own bilge alarm sensors (which I use), but also has two contacts/terminals that you can wire your own sensor to (which I also use). You can simply wire these two terminals to:

1. a relay triggered by your buzzer that comes on after the pumps have been running 15 seconds, if you have this circuitry already on the boat
2. a relay triggered by the bilge pumps, using a 15 second delay timer off eBay
3. a freestanding float switch (or a series of them, wired in parallel) that you can fit in the bilges say 6inches above the bilge pump float switch level

The thing will then SMS up to 3 phones when triggered (plus a whole load of other features)

I haven't compared products much so I'm not saying this is better/worse than any other item recommended above. I'm only saying it does what you asked for, and it reliably does what it says on the (rather expensive!) tin

Visited Yacht Sentinal web site and their product does tick all the boxes. Dont think its too expensive especially for the piece of mind it will give and the options available. Its good to hear it has served you well for many years JFM. Have now decided to install this system and thank you all for your good advice.

All my switches for bilge auto/manual and the fridge are behind the same panel so connections are easy.

For the bilge if you have an auto/manual pump sitch just hook up the the side of the switch that goes +ve to a relay that closes when energised. That relay switching side is linked to the wired trigger side of the alarm.

The fridge gets 12v from the alarm unit via another relay ( as the fridge draws too much for the alarm to switch it independently). The relay just hooks up to the switched side of the fridge switch.

I also have the pir detectors for the alarm system mounted around the boat.

A combined gas and co detector is also wired to the alarm bought from eBay but can't find the link now. Wireless smoke alarms also hook into the unit.

Outdoor locker and anchor locker uses the no contact switches in the alarm pack.

I have a low / high temp alarm yet to be fitted so I know if the boat is freezing whilst I'm away. I've also thought about wiring it so that if the shore power is cut it alerts me but getting time to do it is preventing me right now.

The main security deterrent is a sticker in the door saying

"THIS BOAT IS PROTECTED BY A TEXTING ALARM AND EXTREME VIOLENCE!"
