Bilge heater

I'm going to use my boat all winter (every other weekend or so) and don't want to keep wasting antifreeze in the sea inlet to saveguard against freezing. I was thinking of wiring in a heater of some sorts which will gently warm the engine pipes

I have shorepower to the boat but don't want to go overboard and end up with a huge electric bill and naturally want something that is safe that I don't need to worry about.

Any ideas and supplier contacts?

We could do with this one putting up top. Much more use that the Inland Revenue.

Tube heaters. Greenhouse heaters. Easy place to get them from is your local electrician supply shop. City Electric or others. Although I bought one the other week from City Electric £20. Bought one localy from another source for about £8. Get two about 650mm long. Depends where you can fit them.

Mine has a set on tube heaters cylindrical ones you get in green houses I think.
Three in the engine room plugged into 240 socket via a timer plug, keeps them from
freezing

I use a greenhouse heater that switches on if the temp. reaches zero, thats in my engine room. In my cabins I leave a tube heater on.

How often does seawater freeze? Especially when it's inside a hull. Don't know anyone who is worried about the raw water side of things when the boat is kept in the water, unless of course you're on a river, don't know anything about that!

TLC Electrical www.tlc-direct.co.uk do a plug in thermostat. Set the LCD digital temp. on the unit, plug in your tubular heater and it will switch on /off automatically. I bought one the other day£17.25.
