I'm think of installing one of these as I have a petrol engined boat.

It has two sensors that I understand detect combustible gasses.

Am I right in assuming that if I install one sensor high and the other low in the bilge, then it will monitor both petrol fumes and any possible hydrogen gasses from the batteries?

Does anyone have any experience of these things? Are they any good?

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about any hydrogen, this is unlikely to be a problem and should in any case disperse readily. However, some alarm manufacturers suggest that different sensors are required for petrol fumes and LPG fumes, so it would be worth researching a bit before deciding. Note also that some manufacturers offer waterproof sensors which, depending on how damp your bilge is, might be worthwhile.

Thanks for that. I've had a look and it appears that it will detect petrol fumes. I also looked at ones with waterproof sensors and they seem to be around 2 or 3 times the price, whereas replacement sensors seem to be quite cheap at around 15 quid and my bilge is pretty dry. Will read up more though.

I had one of these with dual sensors. Worked ok for a couple of years and then kept giving alarm on one sensor, and its a very loud alarm!
Sensor was duff, although for what reason who knows. Spare readily obtained and all ok again. At least with 2 sensors you can swap them to see which is faulty. I believe there was a PBO test gas on detectors a couple of years back.

I have a Technisol twin channel gas alarm installed on my Sealine..
Touchwood... Proved really reliable.. But I suppose if it was nt, I may not be replying to this post..
It is a bit noisy when it first starts detecting, before it turns the gas on. At least you know its working..
I consider it to be an essential bit of kit, even though I am diesel powered, I carry petrol and a spare gas cylinder.
Twin sensor, plus warning lights.. one in engine room bilge, one under floor in main saloon. OK Bilge.
