Bilge cleaners

I had to change my oil filter on my 4/107 and the position and room around it meant I could not catch the oil and so it went into the bilge. my auto bilge pump does not suck the last inch or so, so it has remained on the surface coating all the sides as it slops about. I saw some mention of oil absorning pads for this job, that just took in oil but not water, any idea of what they are called, where to get them, size, price etc. Or has anyone another idea to do the same job. The we can get to the fairy liquid stage.

I have now found thanks to all the posts here just what i was looking for, I spoke to the company technical who recommended it above his others for the job I need to do: http://www.thecleaningwarehouse.co.uk/clover-citrus-degreaser-2764-p.asp

It claims to have the emulsifier effect on oils and diesel to enable it to be pumped clean, i must admit to trying various washing powders and liquids with only a partial effect, so hope this will be the solution.

I would like to think that people consider what the effect of pumping oil and bilge contents, out into the water will have.

Perhaps a read of the Oiltechnics site

might buttress the view that a biological action bilge cleaner is better than a straight chemical detergent type.


Oiltechnics stuff (there's a range of products for different applications and environments) does what it says on the tin, or rather the container.

Had a similar problem - used my Pela to suck up the oil and then washed the bilges out.

Didn't like the idea of using the bilge pump as a) don't know what engine oil wil do to it and b) not prepared to risk the polution

Oil absorbent clothes are available from Volvo Dealers - but Amazon is cheaper for the same thing

Soaks up the oil - but leaves water behind.

I've now laid one of the underneath the engine to catch any drips etc before they get to the bilges.

ASAP supplies do the oil pads - I keep them permanently under my Perkins 4108!
