Those of you who know me, will know my predeliction for motorbikes, BSA etc. Well I've finally found THE bike to carry on the boat, which I've always wanted! The 1974 Triumph adventurer, they are rarer than rocking horse manure, but I found one in immaculate condition in Kent. My mate went and looked at it for me, his words were "it's effin amazing, so you bought it!" At last, no more bikes for me this is my last one, as the boat is my last one, I'm a happy little bear today! Didn't cost an arm or a lefg either! TCM got room in your car to take it to France for me? It's spotless, so would go on the back seat. I'll pick it up there!

You might hear today that the national motorbike museum in Birmingham burned down overnight..........I didn't get the full story - I think a couple of hundred were saved but several hundred vintage bikes were lost, most of them irreplaceable.
Sad day for the 2 wheel fraternity.
Cheers

I had not heard about that, a sad loss, I have been there twice a real credit to those who put it together, a great shame.

Re: triumph adventurer

Not sure how many bikes burned tho - pix showed loads of bikes outside.

Anyw back to trumph. Adventurer eh? 500 cc twin. Can't easily gettit in a car. You will have todrive it down there, and it will drop to bits, or you wil. I took a Royal Enfield to Monaco in the seveties and the AA brought it back in four cardboard boxes when the mains went, the one thing for which i didn't have spares. Also didn't have personal cover either so the bike got hom before i did. Good fun tho.

Re: triumph adventurer

The triumph should get there, but as you say I might not! It's not really a bike for long distance work, I'll send a piccie to Tony and see if he can get it on the web page for me, it really is a beaut, my mate won't ride it home from Kent, says it's too nice! Do you know these bikes? There was only very few made and most went to the states, this is a UK one, even rarer. I would ride it down, but take a week or so and have a holiday at the same time.

BBC reports this morning were saying that delegates who were having a meeting in the building managed to save 250 bikes but that still means that 650 were lost, most of them irreplacable, as you say a real tragedy.

Re: triumph adventurer

No, not had one myself. They were pretty rare tho. It is another of those bikes that the press reviewed as "some vibration was apparent" in other words, it is an utter rattler. I can't belive it will be your last bike. Somewhere on the horizon is a yamaha 500 single cylinder, i also foresee an MV and beyond that (in a garage) is a Harley.

Re: triumph adventurer

Had a BSA 500 single, nearly broke my leg! Had an MV 750SS america, almost broke my bank! Got a Yamaha now, boring! Harleys are for old farts! or hells angels (when I finally swallow the anchor) Triumphs' are a bit vibratory!! But I've no fillings to lose! Well only two anyway. Cant be any worse than that B50 BSA, now that would shake you to bits!

Re: triumph adventurer

um, this is a bit rare innit? web search says it is a bit scooterified with a villiers engine as used by lots of small-volume manufactuers of the time, so it will always be a bit manky and unreliable.

Re: triumph adventurer

Um yes well spotted, It is a scooter type bike. But with a mighty big motor.

I tried a few years back to research it too no avail. Could not find it anywhere.

Any ideas?

Re: triumph adventurer

um, it's in the garage!

Fraid life is too short - I wd chuck it away. Nasty when new. If it was all working, still not worth very much at all.

VMSC

You need to contact the VMSC (vintage motor scooter club), Ian Harrop (lovely chap) has about 20 or so Dayton's, Albatross was the bigger one, Flamenco was smaller one, but pretty big by scooter standards, both Laurie Bond designs I think, all the panel work was same as Sun Wasp and Sun somethingelse. Ian Harrop is world authority on Daytons, in fact I think he probly has most of the survivors, Albatross is featured in several scooter books in "Motor Scooters" by Mike Webster.

I think only scooter that was bigger was Maico Mobile.

Ropey Albatross probly a few hundred quid, real nice one mebe couple of grand.

Re: VMSC

Sorry again TCM, I have just found a few details about Dayton Albatross, And its not quite a mighty big motor!! Although big for a Scooter.
Anyway heres a pic. of it;

Dayton Albatross.jpg

Ben, thanks for the info, i am not quite ready to do anything about it at the moment, but when i am then maybe Ian Harrop is maybe the man to speak too.
All in all it may not be worth much, but my wife has a pipe dream about us touring north Scotland on it, Because her father toured europe for a while with it after coming back from W W 2. She's very sentimental.....

Cheers..

Alistair.

Re: VMSC

Wow! Leading link front forks! Now that is an innovation, they are only just going back to this system in modern machinery, very advanced.

Stainless stell rims and spokes, at least it's a start!! Hadn't thought of davits actually, but what a good idea! I crane (with a whisker pole) my bike off at the moment, but davits, I could put it on the quay when I stern to moor, Hmmmmmmm Design time methinks!
