[/ QUOTE ]Oddly enough my paternal grandfather Donald was the foreman at the old shipyard, the Ardrossan Dockyard, which was more or less where the flats now are.

He's the tall good looking one in the middle at the back. The "head of the family" (doesn't look a man to stand much nonsense) is my great grandfather, John MacDonald, originally from Coll (and later Mull I believe). He moved south to work in the shipyards and the photograph was probably taken in Govan at around 1910. After they married, my grandparents moved to Saltcoats when he got the job at the Ardrossan Dockyard. My grandmother lived in the same house at Parkend Cottages until the 1970s. There was gas lighting, no electric, and no hot water unless the main fire was lit.
