Hi All
Well its been a nasty old winter, so we thought a small break might be in order. so we upped and trogged off to Lanzarote for a few days in the sun,
I won’t bore you with the hilarious camel ride. or the drum thumping carnival parade. or the grand tour around the island, steeped in volcanic history with the fire catching, blow hole exploding super heated steam vent, or the lava flow tube with the blue pool therein, and the blind white crabs that gleam and glitter under the water.
Suffice it to say that a great time was had by all.
So to the meat of this post which should really be about things nautical.
The local marina was chock full of boats of all sorts and sizes
and hauled out for a bit of TLC was this to my mind typical Spanish fishing boat. I like the flared bow. nice lines.
I saw this little speedster thinghie but could not name it. No doubt some one out there will enlighten me.
Further down the pontoons was the berth for the Yellow Submarine of Beatles fame, which took load after load of gawping visitors for a short underwater trip of the bottom of the bay to behold through large portholes the wonders of the deep. which included. so I was told a sunken old wreck and a modern fishing boat which was lost in a more recent storm.
The water looked exceedingly murky to me though.
However we did go for a nice boozy (if you so desired) day trip out on a 75 ft catamaran.
They did try to sail but the wind just wouldn’t co-operate. So what’s new. so they left the engines running. Being a nosy sort I had to ask what they were. Hmm !! Yanmar 1500 hp EACH. Perhaps I miss heard him. but I thought that a trifle overpowered considering how little of the boat was actually in the water.
I did get to the helm though.
But on the last day we did cut it a bit fine. The bus back to the airport was to collect us at 5 pm. So we chanced a trip out on one of the local sport fishing boats.
She is a 50 ft twin diesel Spanish built 23 year old Semi Displacement Aluminium hull with twin Caterpillar 375 hp engines. Cruise at 10 kts 14 max. with all the toys.
There were three of us fishing with SWMBOs as spectrators. After we left harbour they, the long blond haired skipper and the ‘’I’m from Barcelona’ type deck hand rigged the rods. 7 in all. Three across the transom in bulwark holders, a further two one on each beam. and the last two way out on the outriggers, the line held by clips to avoid tangles. Though that led to a real beaut of a snarl up, with the two of them going at it hammer and tongs, arms waving, shouting etc. The skipper was doing most of it, but I felt the he was more to blame because he did some rather tight turns with all the lines out. I was just too late with the video camera. Darn !!!
So the trolling went on at a nice 8.3 kts according to the GPS. The deck hand then held out three playing cards and invited us to choose. The idea being that 1 2 or 3 were to take turns as we got a bite. I drew 3.
On and on we went, way out on the briny. A bit choppy but the boat was really perfect. Some spray over the bow and a tad wet on the flybridge, but what the heck.
Cap'n Hook
Then. Whee !! line flying off a reel. One shouts the skipper. so the battle started. Seconds later Whee from another line. Two shouts the skipper. Things are happening a bit fast now, with two trying to reel in, close over the transom. Whee again and Three yells the shipper. I grab the rod, but where to stand now. the deck is full of struggling figures, I end up hard against the bulwark with the butt end of the rod in my guts hanging on for dear life.
Moments later the other two fish get away. so I am left is solitary splendour yo heave hoing until the fish could be dragged on board.
50 pounds of thrashing tuna. And here’s me used to gloating over a 10 pound Callig here in Manx waters.
Ah well. Vive la Difference !!
After a welcome lunch on we went. I noticed the skipper looking through binocs and saw that he was watching for gulls crowding a spot on the water where I think small fry were desperately trying to avoid being eaten by much bigger things further down. So we went charging through that spot.
All was quiet for some time, then it all started again. But this time in a more orderly fashion.
One.......so he gets his aboard. Two..... he starts the fight, But then immediately Three...... This time I am in the chair. Tough on Two He has to do it the hard way. Now I can really get to it. This one is big. I hold the rod up just to wait until I can get a bit of line in. but the damn fish is taking it off the reel against the clutch and nothing I can do about it. So it goes on. Ultinately I WIN THE CONTEST.
It took three days for my left arm bicep and elbow to return to ache free normal.
We did get back to harbour at about 3 20. Had to wait for the bus to collect more passengers from the local island ferry, but made it back to the hotel with about 30 minutes to spare.
Arrived back in Manchester at 12. 15 Bed by 1 am and back to Island the next day.
Holiday over.................
My boat goes back n the water on April 1....is this an omen I wonder.
Well . that’s it for this time.
OK Omega.... you wanted me to show some fish pix.
Cheers
