Bigger diameter pedestal guard, possible to fit?

Hi all
I've got a new pedestal guard with a tube diameter of 1 1/4" , but the old one is only 1" diameter. ( pic is the new one )

I know it's a difficult question, but I'm really hoping I expand the holes on the pedestal arms to accommodate the extra diameter.. has anyone had any experience of doing this?

I also need some bigger feet for it, but I've been struggling to find a supplier, any ideas?

I cant see taking 1/4" out from the pedestal arms would be a problem as you still have the area of the plate holding the tube in place.
 
Waitng for moderator approval? that's enough to put one off posting messages as by the time its approved the message content might have "expired"
 
You will have to remove the plate on the pedestal and get them drilled out for your tube diameter - the stanchion bases you can get on ebay - ttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2pcs-Boat-Rail-Stanchion-Base-for-Tube-90-Degree-316-Stainless-Steel-32mm/163735016867?hash=item261f5e15a3:g:BqwAAOSwbzpdA75C

I dont want to hijack the post but you very rarely see those pedestals on cruising boats out here in the Caribbean. If you sail long distance you dont tend to sit behind the wheel for days on end. You sit under the sprayhood out of the sun and wind. If you do that then you need all sailing instrumentation under the sprayhood. The only thing we have at the pedestal are the engine controls and autopilot control head. We also have another autopilot control head under the sprayhood. If I was to sit behind the wheel I wouldnt be able to see past all that stuff on the pedestal!

Thanks for your input. I'm not intending to sail to the Caribbean.
I want to have the plotter & instruments at the helm for when I'm doing pilotage in confined waters / limited visibility. If I want to see what's going on from anywhere else on the boat I can remote view & control the plotter from an iPad.

I think I'd phone 'Mr Stainless' at Levington (SYH). They're pretty sensible and have done stuff on Seaspray without drama.

Personally I would knock a wooden bung in the hole to be enlarged as that would act as a centre for the hole saw drill then drill it out to the required size in situ as dismantling many things of aluminium often leads to snapped screws.

Haha, if I want to see where I am going in confined waters or limited visibility i put my ipad on the binnacle! I guess if you only sail a few miles then you hand steer a lot. We never hand steer
 
I totally agree with geem. Why would anyone want a tower of instruments right in front of their face blocking the forward view, not to mention compass safe distances being ignored.
The whole crew can watch the instruments when they are mounted under the spray hood.
Faced with this dilemma I mounted my plotter on a shelf along side the pedestal so the helmsman can easily see it, but can rotate it through 180 when sat under the sprayhood.
 
Interestingly, I started this thread asking for advice about fitting a wider diameter pedestal guard.... ok .. let's let our old friend Fred Drift out to play!

I / we don't have a whole crew, just the two of us and 2 kids.
So, when helming we want everything in front of us, Radio, Instruments, Plotter, Autopilot. In a MOB situation, one person can hit the Mayday on the RAM, hit the MOB button on the plotter, engage the autopilot and get the sails under control without moving very far.

We are not putting a tower in, just a single bank about this size with a 7" plotter in the middle, multi-function display on one side, and auto-pilot on the other.

This gives us what we want, to suit our sailing plans and style. This is not going to block our forward view when standing, and when sitting we sit on the high side.

Your style may be different, this is what we have decided suits us.
 
Also, just to add that as we have a NMEA2000 setup, I can have repeaters / additional controls anywhere that I feel like adding them later.
I've already planned for a second Mutli-function display at the chart table.

I would suggest that you both fit your instruments any place that suits you The OP asked for advice on how to modify his pedestal, neither of your posts are useful.

For your information, the OP is based East Coast UK and if he tried to sail his boat Ocean style, he'd spend a lot of time parked on sand banks.
