Big Problem in Las Palmas Marina !!

It has been all over Canarias TV & the papers ! Long long time ago, the Marina discovered that some families had up to 5 boats under different family names, all on Air B&B & similar sites ! They hired some computer whizz kid to find them ! The boat owners were threatened with confiscation & they removed the boats ! That has nothing to do, with the current situation , where the marina is trying to remove 400 boats ? Its now in the hands of 1 law firm , blocking the expulsions ! Why is nobody from the ARC , commenting ? I cannot believe they are being kept in the dark !

OK I did not get the main Demonstration ! However , people were stil in the marina

I stayed more or less twice 5 months period during two years in Las Palmas. Not easy to obtain and keep the berth: this is really the cheapest marina in all canarias islands with very good service, parking, security and all in the center of a vibrant city. Ok grey clouds and some rain sometimes when you find 3 degrees more in Pasito Blanco plus permanent sunshine. Yes when armada from northern countries and also UK is coming in with the ARC banner, you are firmly invited to go away. That's the deal. But I must also confirm that a part of the marina looks a little bit strange with boats transformed in floating caravans , extra superstructures in plywood and canvas etc.. these boats are stucked in the marina and do not move at all. Life is not of course a long quiet river and I remember an old english lady trying to survive on the very very old and damaged wooden gentleman motor yacht of her passed partner. No pension, no money family or house to be back in UK. This was sad because she tried to stay elegant and smiling. We invited here several times aboard but I remember the harbourmaster ( it was in Sitges) said me it wanted to push her out of the marina...

Airbnb on boats is nightmare in all marinas of the world: bloody noise and non ended fiesta wifh drunken " hooligans" in cockpits, people without maritime culture or etiquette, trash bags let on the pontoons, " maletas" as they say in Spain or suitcases with crazy wheels at 6 am, thefts sometimes and youngsters trying to jump on boats to make stupid selfies....in France more and more public or private marinas tend to stop this process. The problem is you have now less boat owners able to pay all the fees involded by yachting hobby. For information, next year the french administration wants to make more " green" by a serious increase on taxes paid every year by french natives keeping their french flag...a lot of retired people with what we call ''timoniers'' or fishing boats will sell their boats, they have oftenly 250 cv or more. The "ecologist" punition will be too expansive..
Do you have a link about the French wanting to put up boat taxes ?…obviously this would be very concerning to me

The DAFN ( droit annuel de francisation et de navigation) old name,.. is the result of a savant bureaucratic math like a collectivist bureaucracy enjoys to take more money from innocent citizens...: you mix the size of the boat and the fiscal value in term of power of your engine. You add some mysterious rules like another math concerning age of the boat and some local another rules ( boat registered in Corsica , still a french island..)
The project - to make nasty boat owners with miserable diesel engines killing our small planet more guilty- is now: take in consideration the real power of the engine to create a new math. La "puissance fiscale" is dead. A fantastic opportunity to increase the tax.

About this annual tax :
To be clear, if you are french with a french flag, you pay. If you are french with a polish flag , a Mickey Mouse flag or another foreign flag you pay the same amount based on the same math but the name on the box has another name : droit de passeport. If you have a Virgin Island flag, you go to jail!!! A Delaware flag with american banner, you may be sunk by Hamas supporters!
Seriously, the only way to avoid it is to be NON resident, cancel the french flag registration, take the money and run to Spain or Italy.
If you are foreigner and your boat stays in french maritime waters you pay.
To give my exemple, my trawler is officially registered at 57', I have only one ''small'' engine, john deere heavy duty 6081 afm 75, so I pay currently 2074 eur once a year. If they consider now the power and cylinders value of this quite big motor, it can be more definetly more expansive. Of course nobody believes every body will be soon in a rush on alibaba to buy a dangerous and non reliable electric motor to replace a John Deere, or a volvo or a yanmar 6 cylinders engine...but the "green" lobby will be happy and the Minister of Finances more!

I understand the rules and the tax….so you are saying that the administrative horsepower calculation is going to be abolished and replaced with a tax on the actual horsepower ?
That is the part I am not aware of…where do you get your information from ?

Just pay you tight git.
The tax is four figures...and I do pay up....it isn’t exactly optional. And now they have scoured all the funeral parlors and found you a suitable artificial hip....when does it get fitted ?

Can't find any mention on Canary news sites I've looked at.....so far!

I kinda get the renewal of marina staff. I've never found them particularly helpful and the queues I the office can be very long.

Not sure about this big boat idea? Larger yachts Moor alongside a pontoon near the cruise ship dock. Was in there a few years back on a 75 foot catamaran. There's room for several there. Next to the shopping mall.

Binning 40 boats sounds more realistic......

I'm finding some stuff in some publications like, amazingly, PBO. But much of the information is behind paywaiis.

Expect it will mean big changes for some liveaboards.

As said , due to other commitments , I missed the main protest ! I only managed to photograph the tail end ! Ricardo Ponte , a well known lawyer , is representing the at least 100 people , threatened with eviction ! Both locals & foreigners ! Canarias 7 newspaper , has printed several pages , on this ! Also TV station Canarias , has done several broadcasts ! So I cannot understand , nobody can find anything , about the case !

Still can't find anything on the papers websites, including a search on Canarias 7. Also Canarian Werely, La Voz and mainland news such as El Pais.

This is clearly something that's affecting a few people massively, but doesn't seem of much interest to the General Public.

If you can recommend anywhere to look I would be interested, ta.

Years ago I witnessed a similar kind of protest under UK law at the old Sheppards Marina in Gibraltar. Didn't work....

That is our entire problem.....special interests from a (perceived to be) privileged minority. We will never get sympathy, in fact the best we can ever hope for is that a politician doesn’t target us to make themselves popular

Minimes at La Rochelle, the biggest marina in EU, has banned AirB&B. Several outfits that have bought multiple boats to benefit from rentals, have tried to block it, but unlikely to get anywhere.
Overload of services (showers and WC) mentioned. Plus the agro from noise late at night.

Not directly related and I have mentioned it before.,
We bareboated with Sunsail out of Greece. Great week, except the the last night at the base, The flotilla lot 'partied' nearly all night, making it impossible to sleep.
Apparently, Sunsail had to quickly find a second lead boat and crew, as half the flotilla refused to continue with the idiots.. We all got the message on the last night.

We bussed back to the airport, and quite a few were seriously damaged and unlikely to be allowed on the plane. That of course was very delayed, so everbody got on. Bit of a fridige atmosphere on the flight..
