The motor cone is the international symbol for "I have an instructor on board" and is never worn at other times ... or so it seems.

There were 20 or so boats in Osborne Bay on Sunday and there were 3 anchor balls visible between them. On the other hand, all the local fishing boats have their shapes welded to the superstructure.

Has anyone ever seen a cylinder on one of the tankers or container ships in Southampton water? (They do show three reds at night though).

Not seen the cylinder up in Soton Water, I've some pix of shipping rounding the North Foreland, I'll look at the tankers for cylinders.

I always try to remember to use mine. Going through the lock at Port Solent a few weeks ago after motor sailing home someone actually remarked that they'd not seen one of those for a while!!!

Am I just being anal or is it that people are becoming lazy about stuff like this or they just don't know ?!?!?!

I don't consider myself to old and stuffy! I'm only 33!!! Have I become an Uncle Albert before my time!?!?!?!

I agree- I'm only 34, but consider it right and proper to show correct shapes and signals and be properly dressed for the occasion, mainly to reduce confusion. I don't think it's anything to do with being old and fuddy duddy- part of the enjoyment is doing it right. Interestingly, I was coming out of the river Dart a few weeks ago following a sailing school boat which was motor sailing but had no day shapes up. Won't mention the name.

Reminds me...last season wind all but died and wanted to get up the Orwell to RHYC to meet some friends, and started the engine to help us over the tide. At first opportunity we hoisted the cone (about two minutes after starting the engine). There were several other boats that had been motorsailing up behind us for some time, none with any form of day shape up. Within 5 minutes of us hoisting, another three had suddenly remembered where their cones were!

It is certainly not about being fuddy duddy, it really is the satisfaction of doing it right!

Yes, the big stuff usually has a cylinder up, it's just that compared with the boat it's on it's so small you need binoculars to see it.

They do have some strange cylinders tho', saw one that looked like a black dustbin liner - and may well have been just that.

Would you like a B flat triangle or F sharp ?
Oh sorry you meant a cone !
These mark the private car parking spaces in the 'unloading only' section of the marina set aside for mobo's

Seen in the Solent on Wed 30th June. Does a bucket count as a day shape for a fishing vessel????
