We have a German Short Haired Pointer which as anyone who knows the breed will realise in an instant is a logistical nightmare on a small 23ft boat. Our solution has been to put him in the local kennels when we go sailing but this is a) very expensive as we have to pay for Friday and Monday because of their restricted weekend opening hours and b) tricky to organise at short notice especially in the summer months when the kennels are heavily booked.

Does anyone know of a kennels with a late night/ early morning opening times near the Postmouth/Chichester area or indeed anywhere along the M40-A34-M3-M27 route from the Midlands to Southsea Marina in Langstone harbour that could take care of the waggy tailed woofer while we bob about around the IoW weekends ?

that sounds like an unfulfilled business need.

Somewhere in an empty part of each marina there should be a cattery or doggery open 24/7.

Couldnt agree more, though probably best sited out of earshot of the boats. We would certainly use the facility if it existed and I imagine plenty of other people would rather put even their smaller dogs into daycare rather than take them out in rough conditions.

Have you tried him/ her on the boat? Many dogs can surprise you buy adapting nicely.

Having given a choice most dogs would rather be with you, what ever your doing than locked away.

I do not know the breed but would guess as long as it gets its run, it may adapt better than you think.

I grown up with GSP's and am on my 3rd since geting married and all of them have loved going out on the water.
Our last one used to come with us on our old 22' Newbridge Venturer with us & 2 young boys. Was a bit of a squeeze but she used to love it and would rather be out sailing than in the kennels.
Now on our Ranger 265 Elsa's got the whole of the bows bed to herself

I'm really quite surprised no one has a solution other than force the dog on board to make his, ours and anyone nears us have a thoroughly horrid time. I contacted the recommended doggery earlier in this thread and met with the usual short sighted brick wall of a response and spent hours trolling for a kennels that might be able to work with us. We did find an organisation that does dog sitting but it cant cope with our needs. So, after a tearful session we're rapidly coming to the sad conclusion its the dog or the boat.

Sorry to all those that think having a barking dog in the marina is a good thing but I want some peace and quiet when I'm at the boat and I wouldn't inflict that on others, unlike some. Also, having had to hose out the back of the car out more than once due to truly amazing quantities of travel sickness I doubt very much the dog would like the boat for more than a short trip in any case. I am truly amazed it was possible to squeeze 4 people and a GSP on a Venturer except to prove its possible but again that's not our idea of fun. We've had him on (big) boats in the Broads but at sea on a tiny sailing boat it is a no go as far as we are concerned.

So, I appeal once more, does anyone know of a kennels with 24 hours access en route from Midlands to Langstone ?

You are surprised? I am astounded. You have a dog and a boat presumably one or other came first so wasn't that the time to decide? Yes kennels are expensive, yes they have opening hours, all this is the 'price one pays' for owning an animal. There is no miracle solution. As to your dog barking perhaps, again, you should have trained him not to!!!

We have a GSP on our Mac 26x, she loves it, she say's it points nearly as well as she does !
However when we occasionally need to go abroad without her or have a wedding to go to we use Pet Buddies, they are a franchise of dog sitters and walkers, search your area, they collect if its a week stay and are very flexible on drop off pick up times, ie Friday evening drop off -Sunday evening pick up.

I had a feeling that in spite of honourable intentions this subject might polarise into dog lovers that feel their pets should accompany them regardless of the comfort and safety of the animal and those around it versus those that have a more enlightened view. fwiw my dog generally does bark unless, I give him the command to, hes playing and getting excited or antagonised by one of the smaller breeds whose owners seem to think the snarling and yapping is cute. Mine is very well trained and well behaved and I am a responsible owner hence asked for advice in the hope of some help and not to be insulted by people that dont know me or my dog. As for the jokes about curried dog..not funny. Tharfield were unable to offer access outside their nomal hours and offered no help finding anywhere else that could, Pet buddies were the organisation I was alsoreferring to, perhaps I wasnt clear enough in my last postso hope that clears that up. Onsea, thank you but Im sure it wont come to that.
