i .am facinated why in the boating world that people can keep large expensive boats on muddy sewer infested streches of watetr and still call it fun, surely if you enjoy your boating you must take the beast to Sea ,4 knots , a lock or seven every mile can,t be fun, prove me wrong what do you get out of a river except,Roach.

1. My family feel safe and come with me
2. Daughters (age 10 & 13) are quite happy to have friends over and can move freely around the boat, rather than at sea when staying down in the saloon can cause sea sickness. They can come for the day without any real pressure on how we are going to get them home.
3. Dogs enjoy it and dogs and sea do not mix very well
4. You have the company of people like Byron
5. The next ice cream or restaurant is only a few mins away
6. We can always go to sea if we wish.
7. The boat is useable 365 days a year.
8. expenditure on fuel is almost nil. and therefore more funds avaialble

All damn good points, plus the locks break up the journey into little fun bits, often social bits IMHO, what with everyone chatting helping with ropes admiring yer dogs etc.
My wife hates the sea loves the river for all the reasons you mention.

Oh and there is the mines bigger than yours brigade as well. Just look at all the 40ft flys in Windsor or Bray marinas, which never go to sea, but like posing on the river. No harm in that I suppose.

The social life on the river is superb, some of the clubs run some absolutely splendid events... even ChrisP must miss these.
YEP! There is the "mine is bigger than yours brigade" but I just walk around with my Willy hanging out 'cos you can't buy one like mine.

Must admit having looked it over, I'd love to pose with one the size of yours.
Twould make me return to the river

Would you care to re-phrase that before people get the wrong idea

Spent about six month on the Severn. It was through the winter, so there was some method in the madness. There is some sort of appeal about it I suppose. Not least, the boat was nearly 200 miles nearer to home. But 6 months was enough. Could not stand any more ditch crawling down the river to the pub. Or for even more excitment. Up the river to the pub. Nah. had to get back to Plymouth.

Reasons.

Nothing to do with wanting to go miles out to sea.

It's easier to get about.
Easier to get to the pubs.
Parking is no problem on the sea.
Even if it's rough. Theres always a sheltered bay or river that is'nt.
It damages the boat less.
There must be 100 pubs to visit, all within an hour and all in prity places like Salcolmbe or Fowey and not. Stourport or Gloster.

Being on the river must be good but doesn't it get get boring having to go up and down the same bit of river everytime you leave the mooring. Now if you can spend a good few days at a time and take a few turnings of the main river like up the Avon rather than just up and down the Severn .... welll

Haydn - where was you boat moored cus I live about MID-POINT between Stourport and Gloucester .........!!!!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif and I totally challenge your implications about this area....... /forums/images/icons/wink.gif - i know a er um a hang on and theres .. er um - actually I quite like Plymouth too.

There you are, proof that the river is on a par with the sea.

Oh yes one last thing.

If you have a problem mechanically, you are 50ft away from the bank.

taking the other view:

River boat owners can handle their boats better because of the practice they get!

That would be a good get together next year : sea against river in boat handling?

Haydn all good points but not if yer in Brighton.
1 there are no pubs cept in marina village
2 & 3 no sheltered bays to park
4 possibly
5 see item 1

Also whilst it does get boring seeing same stretch of river between locks, again just so much of Brighton pier, littlehampton Eastbourne etc one can take.

I can moor overnight beneath the gates of Hampton Court Palace FREE....I can moor at town wharf Kingston Upon Thames and go shopping FREE....I can enjoy friendly banter with almost all the lock keepers FREE.....I can get to my boat within 30 minutes.....I dont need sophisticated nav software...AutoRoute 2000 even tells me where the cashpoints and pubs are.....I could go on but dealing with Learner needs my urgent attention.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
